Is Barkskin’s 20% physical damage reduction factored in before or after armor? I can almost certainly confirm it isn’t factored in after armor, but it actually doesn’t appear to be working at all as far as I can tell.
I decided to test it out on Twin Emps this week just to see what would happen. But when I looked through the logs, although I took somewhat less damage from Melees while BS was up, it was nowhere near 20% and it didn’t appear to help mitigate Unbalancing Strike at all. Below is the log.

EDIT: I just dueled someone for 10 minutes with auto attacks and I’m genuinely wondering if this CD even works at all. It doesn’t appear to reduce damage taken in either caster or Bear form.
all i know its that its pretty bad. Well actually i like it when i got cat since its does reduce my energy gain/
Barkskin is useless for Feral imo, whatever the calculations are. It costs a global and you have to be in caster form so it’s risky to pop mid-tanking, and it’s also dumb to pop prior to a fight b/c it reduces attack speed meaning you do crap for threat, there’s just no scenario to use it except maybe if you’re about to taunt during a boss enrage or something but I just never use it tbh.
Well, if I am OT then I’ll pop it prior to tranquility when my group is taking hella damage, since barkskin avoids interruptions.
Barkskin in vanilla is mostly for casters to use to ensure tranquility or hurricane aren’t interrupted by random pushback. Its pretty lackluster on every other situation except maybe if you’ve got a bunch of 1.0 attack speed hunter pets on you in a bg or something, but somehow aren’t getting shot by said hunters.
Everyone knows the drawbacks and limitations to Barkskin. That’s not really the point here, and that’s why you only see me using it on Twin Emps where you have a chance to cast it and the reduced threat doesn’t matter.
But after looking at the logs, the ability doesn’t even appear to work. So hopefully someone with an eye for analysis can help me understand how or if Barkskin works.
Since both Barkskin and armor are multiplicative, it doesn’t matter. They’re equivalent either way. A*B = B*A.
might be that the 20% reduction doesnt go beyond armor cap
This was my suspicion too, which is why I tested it in a duel too. Even when I was in caster form (nowhere near armor cap), both of us in the duel agreed it wasn’t reducing damage taken at all.
Herp derp, 7th grade math fails me again.
