Do you ever sometimes miss the old talent trees from Wrath? Yeah, yeah. Cookie cutter builds, getting kicked for playing wrong and gimping yourself. But I mean, just looking at the flavor of the old talent names and how these talents changed or improved your rotation. How the last ability like Summon Gargoyle, Howling Blast or Dancing Rune Weapon made you feel strong?
I was just looking back at the old rotations and they were so similar because specializations were just enhancing what the DK already had. Looking at Obliterate dealing damage and eating diseases. I just want to say, it was awesome that we had diseases affect our power. It just seems so thematic that a Knight of death created diseases, brought forth the dead and sapped the life essence from your enemies. It is one of the reasons why I suffered through warrior to 55 just to play such a interesting class.
Say what you want about the mechanics of the old runes, I ainât here to argue if they should return or not, but they did add a uniqueness to the class and the game overall. I donât know. I am just rambling at this point. I do want to see a Wrath Classic Server. I never got to experience the Death Knight in its âPrimeâ as I was still leveling warrior to 55 and came in late.

I will be honest i do miss those old talent trees. Having the option for palm pyro on mages, or having power infusion on my shadow priest. Those were good times.
I will say i made my dk in wrath but i didnât really play him until wod. He was leveled but not touched after that.

I just want to dps as blood again, it felt amazing in wotlk, I guess I can still dps as blood at 120 but that basically requires a bunch of very particular corruptions.

I do miss the old talent system. This new talent system is so bland that youâre forced to take that talent and itâs not competitive.
But with old talent system you could mix and max certain things and it was fun because it the way you wanted and to play. I do sure miss it as years go on. Thatâs why Iâm waiting for wolk classic if they do bring that or something.
Good memories back in wolk. When you die you came back as a ghoul for 30 seconds and wreck. Best time too. Til it got removed.

I do miss the rpgness of it how I could get a nice increase or a new ability.

I liked the old talent trees, but beyond that I liked that wrath dks felt more like a magic fighter instead of what we have now. By this I mean there was a point where you just chained a lot of abilities in unholy presence, many of them spells with a range while maximizing your runes, and it was a lot of fun. Nowadays it feels like the dk gameplay loop is all in the cds unless you are playing icecap, sometimes even requiring pooling resources. For most of the recent patches breath of sindragosa has dominated the frost tree, and obliterate is a shadow of its former self. Unholy also felt more about diseases striking AND minions, it had minions of course but disease management was far more integral to the spec back then.

Back when they changed the talent trees in Cataclysm, that was in an effort to slim things down and they baked in a lot of the passives bonuses the old trees offered in between those interesting points youâd take. These days, each expansion promises new and increasingly elaborate systems upon systems that, in my opinion, are starting to bring back the very problem they had with the old talent trees which is a ton of uninteresting passives that build on themselves, with few interesting choices.
In my opinion, the old talent trees would still be great, but they should have got increasingly wider and not just taller, and maybe even be able to dip into other specâs trees at key points. I think there was value in having that tree tie together the expansions, and while there would be updates, itâd still be familiar. I also think as developers come and go, they all want to put their greasy fingerprint on the game and just improving someone elseâs system isnât as appealing as coming up with your own thing.
I remember it for the week or 2 it was in before it got changed/removed.
Used to go into wintergrasp, find the enemy raid and drop DnD on them and /dance with them because they were feared permanently for 10 seconds.
Dude I remember the dnd fear. Was hilarious.

I will say I am a strong supporter of bringing back blood dps and adding dw to blood and unholy as well. I support having all options for players. I had a thought that since all 3 specs will have dnd couldnât we get a passive that causes dnd to move with us so we do not lose its dps/ threat gain.
To attach onto your post, this is why I want the talent trees back. So much customization (if you ignored what was optimal/viable) and the ability to make your character as you saw fit. I miss that essence and the crazy builds people would discover a long the way. Wish they would consider going back to the Wrath trees which were considered to be arguably the best version of them. Also, hybrid builds sounded insane. I know this was a huge BC thing, but Iâve heard it was wild time.
It really was. And the reason they gave for changing to the talent trees we have now was that people were confused by the complexity of the trees. So they wanted to simplify them. As I had stated in a post on another thread. My guess is it was because people were not playing the game how Blizzard wanted them to play.
Anyway I would love to see the different types of builds people could come up with and sure there are the cookie cutter builds but then you get the builds that come out of no where that put them to shame.
It was a ton of fun playing a death knight in Wrath. I still remember the first battleground I did with mine. I was literally laughing out loud at the craziness I would pulled. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I also liked how Unholy played in legion with the Dark Arbiter talent. I really enjoyed watching my pet crit harder than other players.

But most players donât want to do that, so for anyone wanting to be competitive thatâs not really an option which is why they were changed. Iâm not against flavor, but flavor over function doesnât seem like a good direction either.

To be fair, nothing has really changed. Except now, if you donât choose the right talent, you lose 40% of your dps ÂŻ_(ă)_/ÂŻ.
I get your point. Just seems they sacrificed the flavor for an attempt at balance that made your character feel worse. To your point tho, I agree that it should be function over flavor. It would be great if Blizzard could have found a way to do both. Realistically, I know people (because I am one of them) are always going to choose the path of least resistance. I never got to try the crazy build but I am sure they brought some people joy.
The Great Homogenizing. Itâs been dark times for sure. Iâm seeing some light in some design choices going into sl but of course any taste however small and, well, once you pop you canât stop.

IMHO swtor does the best job in this regard.
Your character has all its abilities baseline. Then you can spend utility (talent) points that buff or enhance abilities already in your tool kit.
You are not locked to 3 choices per row either. Makes for a much larger mix of play style combinations.
The reason I recall Blizzard giving for taking away talent tress was that they only offered the âillusion of choiceâ. That was the big mantra that they repeated over and over to all of us descenters. Which kinda makes sense but arenât we right back were were then now?
âThe illusion of choiceâ. Most talent tier options have one definite take and two never takes. The best we getnisbthe occasional âwell this is good for AOE nshile this is good for single targetââŚwith a lot of just dead and useless fluffâŚkinda like what the took away with the original tress.
But I never heard Blizzard claim it was too complicated.
Truth be told, I believe they changed it because they didnât have the right developers stay around long enough at any one time to properly balance them all.
