I don’t use discord for personal reasons, I’m sure most guilds use it, but what’s your experience, is it required for pugs?
I almost made my own Karazhan group, but when people started asking for the discord link, and I told them I wasn’t using it, they started leaving, stating that it was needed for raids.
I don’t think this’ll will change in WOTLK either, so I think I’ve accepted that without discord, I won’t raid, so fair enough I suppose, I wouldn’t want to hold anyone back.
So curious, does anyone actually raid without discord? Or is it basically mandatory for WoW these days?
People want voice comms for raids. I wouldn’t join a raid that wasn’t using ventrilo, teamspeak, discord or any other form of voice communication that was common at the time. Whether it is necesarry or not isn’t up for debate. If theres no voice comms then there’s not going to be good organization and thus higher likelihood for failure.
In my experience, pugs that didnt have Discord setup always went south quick. Even in easy content like ZG, it just makes things go much much smoother to have everyone on voice instead of typing everything out. I would go as far to say that it is mandatory. For example my guild (and im sure lots of others) have channels set up specifically for raid sign ups, logs posting, weekly Kara split rosters, and many more. It really just consolidates a lot of things into one place. I personally wasnt crazy about Discord before Classic, but it really makes you feel like you are apart of a community when you see people posting stuff throughout the day. Give it a shot!
I play with a boomkin who has a small child next to him asleep.
He will still be in Discord to listen, even though he never speaks. If you don’t want to be in discord because you don’t want to listen or have the noise, tell them you’re deaf.
It’s gonna be tough. I think you need to search for a deaf guild. Even minimal mechanics are daunting for a pug who hasn’t completed the content a bunch of times
You can mute yourself and never talk but typically people like direction and a raid leader to make calls.
Imagine on Mag a cube clicker dies and they are up to click a cube in 6 seconds, you won’t be typing that out, you would of wiped because you aren’t in discord for example.
If you don’t want to speak that’s fine, you can still type in raid chat, the biggest thing is you being able to listen.
I’ve heard about it once or twice. There was a guild that had a large number of deaf players (I think), and they decided to raid without voice comms. Everything that was communicated was through text.
