Does anyone else miss when forums were about the game?

People in general are so uninteresting all they do is complain, talk about themselves or make up problems to be mad about.

This is the outcome.

I will add because we are a bunch of drama queens, we flock to the more dramatic threads than tame ones.

Most of these people don’t come to discuss how a class or dungeon or raid can be better. Most of them just come here to complain about how they hate some change that was made and threaten to quit playing.

Don’t forget the likes, people are hyper aware of that little heart and how many they get.
I really wish they would bring back the downvote button…

Eh, I don’t think this plays a factor and content with no downvote system.

Comments speak louder than hearts.

I tryed to talk about the game seriously when I first started using them at the end of wod and realized what’s the point lol. I can’t say much tho at times I get wrapped up in the dumb stuff here anymore.

Thats kinda how i feel this and most other forums are at this point, just a bunch of old users who browse it all day and night crapping on anyone who tries to bring up a discussion that requires more than 2 seconds of thought. This isn’t the first time i’ve tried to point this up only to be told i’m in the wrong because reasons. Guess I really do have to accept most of the regular posters are only here to argue with people over petty nonsense.

Well you see, it’s because the forums are literally the devil.

It’s more that the only threads that gain any traction are the surface-level, meme-worthy, or troll topics. Engaging in any criticism or discussion of the game with actual depth and nuance on the forums is a fool’s errand. Most people don’t go online, let alone to WoW forums, to think critically and give each other the benefit of the doubt. It’s a problem with the Internet age, in which we are rewarded with attention and engagement by being as inflammatory as possible and by appealing to as many people as we can.

And since we expect people to troll and be inflammatory, if we encounter someone trying to be sincere, we assume they are being sarcastic or taking the game too seriously. I don’t know how we come back from this environment.

for years i stayed only in the Dungeons and Raids forums.

but they stopped talking about dungeons and raids. they get like 3 topics per day.

yeah its almost like actually discussing relevant parts of the game has been replaced by people complaining about how one time someone said they did sub par dps and therefore anyone who runs m+ is elitist jerks.

You’ll find what you’re looking for in third party communities.

I think “serious discussion” threads have mostly died out because their replies tend to veer towards, “lol no that’s dumb”, “what no that’ll cost a raid tier”, “why do you care about that”, “real players don’t want this”, etc — an endless train of posts dismissing the original post out of hand, often due to zero-sum thinking and crab mentality (“if others win that means I lose” or “if I can’t get what I want nobody will”), making discussion impossible.

I mean yeah basically. No one wants to have a real discussion here anymore. They just want their biases reaffirmed for the elventy gazillionth time and damn any logic that gets in their way.

odd, the topics remaining have no intention of discussion… OP comes out swinging his entitlement with no interest for discussion.

For me, not really, the game is nice and it’s cool to talk to other people who play it though.

I miss the days of the role forums, and when guides were in the forums being bumped and reported for sticky.

Discord is great but it basically killed the need for them.

Discord is a much better experience than Ventrilo, Teamspeak, Mumble etc for voice chat but yeah I don’t like how it’s supplanted old style forums. It’s both monopolized discussion and split it up across so many different “servers” (which is a really bad misnomer, I wish they’d figure out some other term) with no way to search through or easily scan through it all at once.

I think one of the biggest problems is that its far easier to moderate a discord than it is a forum. In the case of the wow forums, you bascially have to explicitly cross several lines AND be reported for being a jerk and as we’ve seen with some posters, thats not enough. With discord, as the mods are often people who hang around often they know whos being a troublemaker and whos actually trying to make a discussion. Forums seemed to more or less die around the 2017 or so timeframe as discord gained in popularity.

When I make topics, I try to think of something original or hasn’t been posted in a very long time.

I have my Fox thread, my Warcraft AI thread, and conversation pits.

Meanwhile, what I see are redundant threads or some no name 1 post poster drop a megatroll topic that incites everyone like kicking over a bottle of nitroglycerin
