Been scouring reddit and the forums, but a lot of the threads regarding the sand trolls is a couple years old.
I want to RP as a sand troll witch doctor. With the events of the BfA and SL, does it make sense for a sand troll to be in the Horde, or would it be twisting lore too much? I’ve seen some older threads mention the possibility of being a deserter or possibly being a sand troll that followed the Zandalari’s lead in joining. I want to actually be able to RP on the server without getting eyerolls. I appreciate any insight.

It is 100% canon. Either by just wanting to join the horde, or joining with the zandalar. I say go for!

My headcanon is that since all Troll tribes are part of the Zandalari Empire, they follow the Zandalari’s lead. So if the Zandalari Empire is now part of the Horde, by extension, that means all tribes are part of the Horde, even ones that have been traditionally hostile, such as the Farraki and Vilebranch.

Anyone can join the Horde. Canonically, all you require is to prove yourself as useful and willing to live by the ideals of the Horde, swear the Oath of Allegiance to the Horde, and have 3 or more members of the Horde in good standing willing to vouch for you, and that was a Centaur who wanted to join the Horde.
I imagine a Troll would require significantly less hurdles than that, regardless of sub-species.
But yeah, with the Zandalari joining the Horde, I could fully see a lot more Forest, Jungle, Sand and Frost Trolls joining the Horde, either to escape their Tribes or seeing it as greater protection for themselves with the Alliance now free from fighting the Horde and able to focus its military might on them exclusively.
As long as you arent out there killing members of the Horde, there isnt much of a reason a Farraki Troll cant join up… or at the very least be a neutral party to the Horde.
If someone is friendly and doesnt condone/support/assist in killing/destroying a group of people, that group of people will usually be open to support/friendship.

I can’t remember, didn’t they add cosmetic options for other trolls with the Shadowlands update?
I kind of thought that everyone just accepted that Trolls are kind of like the on-again, off-again relationship of the Horde.
Sometimes they fight, sometimes they work together. Both sides seem to be okay with this and take it as they come–the Horde doesn’t begrudge a few treasons, the Trolls don’t seem to mind a few attempted genocides. This is just how they work.

They did, so trolls can look like Farraki now.
That said, to answer the OP. It is very easy to excuse RPing a Farraki since Zandalar joining the Horde allows the option of saying the Farraki character joined on their own free will or were among the refugees who joined because their hosts did.
So if trolls can look like Farakki, then they’ve been brought into the Horde, either as free agents or following the Zandalari. ezpz.
While I’m not against players taking free will with stuff, I will admit that there’s less of an argument for “you can’t play this!!!” if the combination/race is playable lol.
There’s basically no basis for any “you can’t play this” arguments. The lore is pointless and aetheric. The rules change all the time. Entire societies of people forget world events on a patch-by-patch basis.
No rules. No lore. Only strength.

RP whatever you want. If someone doesn’t like it they can, not engage with it, that’s it.
After BFA and the downfall of General Jakra’zhet, the Zandalari began rehabilitating surviving Farraki. Some may remain hostile, but the tribe is not a monolith and individuals can choose to go where they please.
They would not receive any real scorn? From the Horde since they are just another Troll (going on a killing spree of horde citizens notwithstanding). Have fun with it and ignore the haters.

Yes! We need more Farraki troll RPers! My troll is a nomadic exile from the remnants of the tribe so he joined the Horde. Its 100% lore-friendly.
A bit late to this one but I think it’s 100% viable and am considering doing it myself, for a few reasons.
- New customisation options, obviously.
- Most of the peripheral troll empires have utterly fallen, including the Farraki. They’re refugees in Zandalar as of BFA, and Zandalar joined the Horde. That kind of makes all the refugees at least loosely affiliated (though I imagine not all are happy about it)
- Extending on the previous point, other tribes have some pretty deep links with Zandalar. While the Farraki General Jak’razet was ultimately a traitor, he was the supreme commander of Zandalar’s armies. That’s a pretty big deal. If they’re linked with Zandalar on such a level, we can assume that other troll variants exist within the Zandalari power structure. I doubt Jak’razet was the only non Zandalari in the whole military. So this adds credence to the idea that Zandalar’s decision to join the Horde extended to other tribes, including the Farraki.
While there’s never been a definitive and specific acknowledgement, I’d suggest it’s pretty clear that Sand Trolls now have a place in the Horde, albeit one that hangs onto Zandalar’s coattails and lacks its own representation

Folks (including myself) have been role-playing sand trolls for years. Join us!
Perhaps as far as having their own empire, but Tal’Farrak is their earned place within Zuldazar for their storied past. I feel like that’s worth keeping in mind for people that want to rp Farraki trolls, they have that place because they were one of the hero tribes to rise up into an empire. Tal’Aman and Tal’Gurub follow that, too, it’s why they have their own enclaves as opposed to simply mingling en masse with the other tribes at the Terrace of the Speakers. I’m sure it’s in part why Jak’razet was even considered, but that writing and story regarding his installation is more angled towards Zul needing more of his people in high places and an anomaly within the Empire.

We rent out the Amani district in the Port to the Sindorei every so often to remind the prideful Amani of their position in the world.
Being viciously petty isn’t getting you a rainforest cafe outside of Tal’Aman.

Not really viciously petty so much as the functional happening with game representation.
This said, on a serious note it does all still mean we functionally have ever troll type represented in the Horde now with the only ones lacking a large population present as the Drakkari
arent the farakki still hostile to Horde players in Zandalar?
I can attack tyrande in Darnassus doesnt mean that the tree is still there or there isn’t a peace whatever the heck keeping me from doing that
