Do you want an RPG without RNG?

I often see people say negative things about the game due to RNG. Yes its frustrating when you work hard and you don’t get what you want… Its a game. RNG is a huge element of RPGs and WoW is an MMORPG.

People need to understand that RNG is part of the game and you shouldn’t be able to get everything you want just handed to you. Its not part of the core of this game.

Every game has RNG in it. It’s the hunt that drives us to adventure through this world. When you and if you finally succeed you will feel extremely great. I love this game and love that some things are harder to get than others. You’re gambling your time in a game that goes deeper than any other game in the world.

It’s okay to be mad when you don’t get the RNG you want and its okay to complain about it but I just feel people get too upset over RNG over this game. Please just enjoy World of Warcraft and when things do go your way, remember those momemts. Remember your achievements and when you succeed.

Have fun and happy hunting

FFXIV is an MMORPG that has basically 0 RNG (unless you’re doing their equivalent of Mythic Raiding).

I don’t ENJOY that. I think it makes everything way to predetermined and turns the gameplay loop into more of a chore list than it should ever be. I don’t like knowing what gear I will be wearing and the day I will be wearing it from day 1. It kills my desire to keep playing.

But I’m just using it as an example to point out that RNG doesn’t HAVE to be the primary means of getting rewards. FFXIV is a very popular game and it largely avoids RNG.

That said, WoW has been going TOO far in the RNG direction these last couple expansions.

RNG has a place. I feel strongly about that. But Corruptions were a perfect example of it taken to an unhealthy extreme. RNG on if you get a drop at all. RNG on if its the slot you needed. RNG on if it has corruption at all. RNG on if it’s the corruption you wanted. RNG on what tier the corruption is. All on ONE piece, and that’s not even accounting for if its the specific item/stats you were going for or any extras like tertiary stats or a gem socket.

That’s insane, and I totally understand why people complain about RNG in WoW.

There is a middle ground.

RNG is not fine. Having something to work toward that you are guaranteed to get if you put in the hard work is a far better system. I do not like having some invisible force in the background that dictates if I can get something based on its whim. If I put in the work for something, I should get it.

RNG is like a spice. Just because having it makes the dish better doesn’t doesn’t mean you should unscrew the cap and dump the entire bottle on your plate.

The problem isn’t that WoW has RNG, it’s that it went entirely too far with piling it on.

I feel like we’re in a much better place in SL with gear RNG, specially now that you can farm sockets.

RNG related complaints aren’t about the fact that RNG exists, rather the complaints are about the overabundance of it, with some mechanics being RNG on top of RNG on top of even more RNG.

I heard gear is going to be more scarce, so I’m hoping that will make things feel like it did in Classic/BC. No need for crazy RNG-based versions of gear. I don’t care if there’s RNG in stuff like a weekly chest, but I do care that there’s RNG on gear like warfrorged or titanforged.

huh?

There is healthy levels of RNG… and unhealthy levels, even Vegas knows this. You need there to be so many winners or people won’t play. At times recently, Wow has been in the camp of… well, to much RNG. But it’s not even just the RNG, it’s the RNG on the RNG on the RNG.

Like the weekly chest. First, it needs to be in a slot you can even use. Then it needs to have the stats you want. Then it need to have the right corruption (pre-vendor). Considering the MASSIVE power difference, a single item could account for 4-5% of your total healing or damage or MORE.

You see, what you want is a healthy and balanced level of RNG versus effort. If a player puts in the effort, they should eventually get what they need or want. Lately that hasn’t been the case.

You know the board game Settles of Catan? One of the reasons it was so successful is because it balances ‘luck’ or RNG with skill. So you can get lucky at times, but without skill you can’t consistently win. Wow needs a better balance of that.

RNG can be fun… but when it feels like it’s required to perform well, then it sucks.

RPG in this game is silly.

The game is created like a chore, so players treat it like a chore. It’s why when Blizzard ever nerfs convenience to make the world seem bigger or otherwise, players revolt.

The maximum of RNG that should exist in the game is which item from the loot table dropped. No layers, no random this or chance of that.

Perhaps that means the philosophy of the current game design is wrong?

To be honest, RNG/dice rolls/randomness in video games has always kind of got on my nerves. Take Pathfinder:KIngmaker, for example. I want to open this chest. My rogue DEFINITELY has a high enough skill to open it… but he/she rolled low and now I can’t open it.

What does this encourage? Save scumming. You quicksave before every chest and just reload until you succeed in the roll. VERY unsatisfying gameplay.

It works in table top games a lot better than it does in video games.

Unless you’re playing a game with just one save but those come with their own set of problems (like a corrupt save file wiping out all of your progress…)

everything is shades of grey.
the answer isn’t no rng or only rng.

Save scumming, hhrmMM??
Maybe saving should be RNG’ed… did you rEaLly saved? Maybe file got deleted… copied another save file? Made a new random save?
Why is the game uninstalling?

Bro please.

Don’t give them ideas…

We do need some rng. But it shouldn’t be everything.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with RNG, and nobody’s complaining that it -exists- in the game. The contention is that there are layers on layers of it existing in the game right now. We had to deal with getting an item to drop, whether or not it’d roll corruption, and sockets, and titanforging. WoW’s -always- had RNG and RNG in loot drops or stats is fine, but compounding RNG just removes your input.

People do understand that. They want less RNG not ZERO RNG.

RNG on just gear dropping itself is enough rng for gear . RNG on a mount dropping ok by me . RNG on abilities to do damage not so much .

Besides the basic rng that belongs like what drops from loot tables like gear and mounts ect. It feels like with all the added rng on top of rng Blizz has given us all a 20 sided die and it’s all filled with 1s.
