Nah. The current direction of the game is going to be the WoW-killer.
no riots MMO will not kill wow
no MMO will ever kill wow
only blizzard will kill wow
TO BE FAIR… people were saying Sonic would kill Mario for a long time. The Mascot Wars were totally a thing… Mario was simply first and he won and cemented his immortality.
People just keep talking about WoW killers because they want to threaten Blizzard. People don’t threaten Mario because Mario is what it is, and nobody will change that with threats, but WoW doesn’t have a “Miyamoto”, so people try to steer the ship with threats and anger.
Every MMO that has come out since 2005 has been dubbed a “WoW-killer” and none of them have been. WoW will die when Activision no longer sees it as a cashcow, when it becomes more of a hassle to maintain than it brings in for revenue.
That said, I am interested to see what Riot does with its MMO. I don’t care about LoL, and I don’t like to play MOBAs in general, but all of my friends are obsessed with LoL and its lore, and I am ready for a new MMO.
also its riot
so its going to be a mess of whatever deals the most damage being flashy as hell and can two shot you at any time while the rest of classes struggle cause riot beleives in flashy gameplay and not balance
It’s not going to kill WoW. WoW has been #1 since its inception, and nothing else has even come close to its popularity. While Shadowlands content is worth spitting on, we know the content is going to consistently change, along with the expansion as a whole, which is a huge incentive that keeps players coming back. The game as a whole is still awesome. Shadowlands is what’s bad. Not WoW.
I wince in agony every time I read a post talking about Final Fantasy 14, how awesome people think it is, and how it’s going to replace WoW because of its better content model. Games like that are literally just subpar copycats of WoW, which is why neither Final Fantasy or any other MMO has, nor ever will come close to being as great as World of Warcraft.
Who cares.
Riots MMO is gonna entice other types of players.
Then they’ll realize how garbo that MMO is and return to their mmo of choice.
MMO’s aren’t easy to just make and be a hit.
Just because Ghostcrawler leads it, doesn’t mean it’ll be great.
It’ll be aimed to a PVP crowd most likely, the community will suck.
So stop looking at things as ‘‘killer’’ and more just ‘‘something people MAY enjoy’’.
THAT IS WHAT GAMES ARE FOR.
Depends how you define ‘wow killer’.
No MMO has the capability of killing WoW on launch.
But if you mean it could develop into a great game that appeals to people over time and is improved to a point where it competes with WoW, as WoW design continues shooting itself in the balls, then maybe.
Riot’s MMO doesn’t look stellar to me, personally. I think the only reason FFXIV even surpassed WoW is just because WoW’s team is so incompetent that they let the game fall this far, but guess we’ll see if that situation ever improves eventually.
FFXIV surpassed WoW because Squenix’ team is killing it right now. Shadowbringers is widely considered, by people who have played it, to be the best expansion any mmo has ever had. The game obviously isn’t perfect, and it is 100% not the right game for many people(especially many WoW players since it lacks that focus on competitive content that many wow players love)… but the simple fact is that the FFXIV team is on fire right now and they are reaping the rewards of it.
Sure, I get that.
But even with that considered, WoW has a massive audience. Ffxiv is only touching WoW now because of how far things have fallen.
Pick any period between TBC and MoP, WoW demolishes any MMO that has or will come out.
If they ever got their crap together and stopped pushing mediocre garbage on us, WoW would be back to the undisputed top overnight.
When it is out 11 .0 or 12.0 will have already of killed WoW.
I think it’s odd that people are hyped about Riot’s new MMO at all. Riot sucks, bro. Nothing they make is any good.
I mean, not so much anymore.
Yes, Blizzard brought MMO gaming to the masses, and they absolutely deserve credit for that. But the MMO business model wasn’t sustainable in such large numbers - there was no way Blizzard could’ve maintained that. It was inevitably going to shrink. During BC/Wrath, WoW was a ‘jack of all trades’. Being such, it appealed to VAST audiences who had no alternatives at the time. It brought in a massive number of people who were like ‘ya this is cool. It does everything! It’s great!’. But it was absolutely 100% inevitable that other games would come out that targeted specific niches… and that each of those games would siphon away the portion of WoW’s playerbase who was playing WoW because it was the ‘best they could get’ in that niche. And, at that point, Blizzard would have to pick something to focus on. Blizzard picked ‘competitive MMOs’, and have been narrowing their focus on that every expansion since then.
FFXIV picked ‘narrative-based, community driven MMO’, and have been focusing on that. And it’s worked for them. Other games have picked their own niches, and they have also been successful. But all of these targeted games inevitably fragmented the MMO audience.
Activision already killed wow… and blizzard.
It does though. Hence why the launch numbers spike so hard before spiraling into non-existence. If Blizzard stopped being absolute clowns, this game could be hitting Wrath numbers again.
Riots MMO. I don’t know what to expect. The client is DOG ever since they “upgraded” it years ago. If their MMO is anywhere as neglected and laggy as their biggest selling point, LoL, it’s doomed.
Moba-wise…
HoTs is fun but the thing about mobas is that they are competitive and it takes a LOOOONG time to learn every single champion and what to expect from them. I’ve tried DotA and hots, but I go back to LoL cause I know what the majority of the champions do. I don’t care to learn more, no matter how adorable puck n Brightwing are.
I think a Riot Runeterra MMO is very promising and has potential like WoW had in the early days. It has all the things you need for a successful MMO launch:
1.) AAA company with tons of money and experience running highly popular games
2.) Stylized artistic aesthetic with “cool” recognizable characters
3.) Established game world with lots of lore and locations that people know and would want to explore
4.) Huge existing playerbase that’s interested in the game world
MMOs aren’t games you can just make out of the blue with no established audience. They succeed when you already have a world and playerbase to build from (WC3, final fantasy, etc.) and very deep pockets with a lot of development and gamerunning experience. More than any other company I think Riot captures the things that Blizzard used to be and the setup you need for a successful MMO.
We’ll see if they deliver though. It’s going to be years before it’s ready. I hope they succeed, MMOs are BADLY in need of competition and fresh blood, and I don’t see Amazon’s game or AOC filling the demand.
Don’t make the mistake of absolving Blizzard of responsibility. Activision certainly has a part in this, but Blizzard’s ineptitude and horribly designed retention systems along with the destruction of all rpg elements is what has ultimately kneecapped the game.
The only thing that’s killing WoW is WoW. SL is an awful expansion by every metric and some serious long term changes need to be made if the game is to climb out of the pit it is in. Ghost Crawler is working on Riot’s new MMO which is a good sign that it should be at least decent. If it’s anything like the Wrath days, retail WoW is a goner.
