Video games seem to becoming more and more of an accepted hobby in society (as they should, it’s literally bigger than the movie industry) but I still know people embarrassed or hide the fact that they play, especially that they play WoW.
Do you ever do this? Did you ever? Why?

I feel the need to hide the fact that Blizzard ripped me off by conning me into buying Shadowlands.

Nope. Seems silly.
Granted, few people care what I play.
I never did, but I am also a bit above the average age of a WoW player so I was already beyond the point of giving a pig’s fart what anyone else thought.

I’m quick on the draw. What can I say?
I never had a reason to, why on earth should I be ashamed to play the same game that Henry Cavill, Mila Kunis, Vin Diesel, Felicia Day and so many other celebrities play?

Giving a pigs fart about what others think personally, I can agree with. But I’ve seen far too many times, gaming get really frowned upon in business, in multiple industries.
When I used to interview people for a job, I would ask them about their hobbies. I know not everyone does this, but I like to know about the person I might be hiring. If they said they played WoW, I was honestly more likely to hire them.

I don’t hide it, but I don’t usually go out of my way to mention it either.

It can actually have some relevancy to certain positions, even far outside the gaming industry.
I never once in my life felt the need to hide the fact that I play WoW. Why would you?

No, I never have. I kinda sorta look down on watching television, so if a TV watcher looks down on me, well that’s just different strokes. My brother is one of those super serious critically thinking movie watchers. I can’t talk to him about film (I think too much of it is garbage) and he can’t talk to me about games (he has zero knowledge or interest).
Given, I don’t go out of my way to tell people about WoW, it might come up in conversation if you talk to me long enough but I never lead on it or anything. I have other things I can talk about, though admittedly I have social anxiety so I’ve never quite settled on a “correct” way of talking to people.
Anyone who judges you for playing online when they (most likely) watch tiny men in the TV fight over an oddly shaped ball for entertainment is kind of a pot to kettle thing. Like Doug Stanhope said (in a bit where he directly referenced wow against sports etc),
“We all have our stupid.”

Like I said, because its often frowned upon in the work place is the main reason really.
Ive heard OTHER people say they dont want a potential partner knowing. I can see that when I was much younger but I’ve learned being up front and honest about as much as possible saves a lot of BS in the end.

Who CARES what people think??? Just live your life and stop putting so much weight into these mind-numbing social niceties and customs.
Unless they’re paying your bills, you do as you please. The social contract is arbitrary and is meant to keep non-free thinkers in line and subservient.

No. I remember back in middle school these 2 guys I got put in a group with for a project were talking about WoW and I was too shy to say I played too. That’s like, the only time I felt embarrassed
Nope because I don’t care what people think about me.

Over 100 million accounts have been created in the history of the game. If it’s something to be embarrassed by then a lot of people are hiding skeletons in their closet…

Gaming in general is still being frowned upon by my coworkers and boss.

Playing 4h with my friends, headsets and having a ton of fun. OMG you gaming addict.

Not really. I wear lots of clothes that signify I am a gamer and have for many years. Now the stigma with older generations are still very much a thing. Too bad by the time the stigma is demolished I will be a little old lady. Nothing wrong games that generate a massive business. " The video games market could be worth over $90 billion by the end of 2020"
I think it will take another 30-40 years for the stigma to be obliterated and embraced fully in western civilization. With generations that don’t know any other life without gaming (Think of younger generation with smart phone for example…) in the entertainment industry are much higher seniority. Compared to ones we have now that snub it, but like making their money off it and in some cases destroy it. (Can’t explain some of the decisions made with some of these companies…) Which unfortunately we are currently in those times.

I think that there’s still a negative stigma about gamers (no matter the platform).
But I have seen and article/posting about someone using their WoW experience in a job interview (even did it myself once). The person didn’t mention WoW itself, but some of the things done along the way in playing. Time management, assisting others with difficult tasks (quests, dungeons, raids), supply and demand strategies (making gear, enchants, etc), taking on interim leadership roles (raid/class leader), and a few other things.
I don’t advertise that I play, unless gaming comes up in conversation.
