Do you sim your character?

In today’s game with so many systems unless you use some outside website or program it’s almost impossible to actually know what’s good for your character. Are you the type of person who just takes the higher Ilvl? or do you sim every single item you get?

personally I would like to see something put into the game to help players identify better what would be an upgrade. I know there’s been times where I sim an item that’s 20 or more Ilvls and it’s actually a downgrade from the item I am wearing.

I know that the devs talked about wanting to make ilvls matter more so hopefully we don’t continue to get high items that are worse than the ones we have :frowning:

I did when I actually did any type of content that mattered, and I will once again when I resume doing said content, but I don’t currently, no.

I’ve never really bothered with it.

I’d do it if I was pushing really high end content but I’ve never had trouble with what I’m doing and my damage is always a-okay

If it’s close in ilvl or a toss up say because there is a socket then yes I sim, but I’m not really strictly in one camp or the other because it just depends on the piece and what I have already.

I sim everything before equipping it. Few weeks ago I got a 375 haste/mastery ring I thought would be an upgrade over my 360. Turned out it wasn’t and I was able to give it to someone that it was an actual upgrade for.

Just use Pawn. The info I need is “this item might be lower ilvl but it’s much better for your spec”, which that addon provides in a quick and easy way.

I have to sim, not enough up to dates videos and guides for WW so I kinda gotta figure it out on my own.

I go for ilvl
I sim talents, azerite, enchants, etc. based on my gear tho
The ilvl is a pretty important numbet to flex with

Anything that involves a spreadsheet automatically classifies it as work, not fun.

So no, I don’t sim my characters.

Nope. Never have and never will since that sounds way more like work than fun.

You can’t sim healing. Shadow users probably should though because they have some garbage stats and traits.

Yes, It’s often the only way to know if a piece of gear is better, especially with Enhance, since random procs make dummy testing impossible.
And, Simcraft tip for gear comparison with bag items:
Bag item:

# Honorbound War Staff (340)
# main_hand=,id=163872,bonus_id=5125/1532/4786,reforge=28
Edit it like this:
copy="Honorbound War Staff (340)"
main_hand=,id=163872,bonus_id=5125/1532/4786,reforge=28

It then makes a separate run with the bag item equipped and lists it by the name in the copy= line. You get a direct comparison, with two graphs one above the other. You can also do it with multiple copy statements.

Yup, I use this as well.

It puts a bright green arrow and a % upgrade value. And I just use it’s suggestions.

In the end, it’s convenient, but not necessary. Instead, you need to learn the top 2 secondary attributes that affect your spec. Like, say, out of the blue, Crit and Mastery.

Then, you look at two items, and compare their main stat, first attribute, and second attribute. If the new item “has more”, then its, more likely than not, better.

It’s gets gamey when they’re the same iLevel, but then it’s less important.

It’s also more important on jewelry which do not have the main stat.

But in the end, without an add on, it’s not that hard when you know your top 3 stats.

Haha! I clicked on this because I thought you were talking about turning characters into Sims!

Gear is a very passive thing to me. If it’s a higher ilvl I use it, if its not, I don’t. Good stats? Bad stats? It’s just all part of the power variation between different alts.

I use pawn in game… I don’t swap my gear all around and sim every possible combination and trait to see if I can squeek out 127 more dps by wearing a lower ilvl item with haste and crit vs haste mastery or haste vers.

Its a game and I dont care to spend an hour outside of game min/maxing when the greater issue is failing to mechanics.

Well, Pawn is only marginally effective, and ONLY if you get a good pawn string from a reputable guide. The built-in Pawn strings are absolute garbage and will lead you the wrong way every single time.

Simming only takes a few minutes if you REALLY need to know something, and is well worth the time spent. Just download the simulationcraft addon, do /simc in game, ctrl+c to copy and head over to raidbots dot com. Use the TOP GEAR sim and select the items to compare and 3 minutes later you’ll have an answer.

sims are wrong they dont take how much you will be moving around in to factor.

so in a sense all sims are wrong.

I simed my character. They drowned after I removed the ladder from the pool.

Wait, not that sim…nm. No I don’t sim normally but I’m not raiding normal+ due to time.

Not at all. If it’s a higher ilvl I’m going to equip it. I’m not concerned with min/maxing anything since I’m just a filthy casual. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
