Just in general, go in to specifics if you wish, I would love to hear you reasoning. It can be any reason you want.
I prefer old wow for sure.
Things were definitely much more epic back then
Everything is too easy now and arena is making everything become generic.
In the old world there was adventure. In the new world there’s just loot.
Old was better. New just makes the whole raiding scene really pointless knowing the next expansion is going to make each hardworking gear get replaced from a random mob drop, and the same will happen in WotLK when the first zone is equivelant to Tier 4.
I was quite dissappointed with the size of outlands it’s a joke compared to what the first dev team put together. Cant expect much from Everquest dev’s though.
There was a sense of community, I used to know everyone on my server because everyone would hang out in Org, now it’s all spread out and going to be even more spread out because of lolDalaran
Resilience killed this game. Vanilla WoW was better.

Old World of Warcraft all the way.

hmm…I split my wow experience into like a "classic era (vanilla - wotlk for me) then the “modern era” which to me was cataclysm onward.
I like both of them…I do think the classic era did a better job fulfilling the MMORPG and fantasy experience it promised…The modern era is better at staying relevant with the trends…like speedrunning content, competition due to various streaming platforms nowadays, and maybe even “system driven” types of gameplay.
I do think too much QOL didn’t come without sacrifices, like some of the community things you touched on, which is unfortunate tbh
not advocating for either, but I guess I wish Modern would just re invest in some of the more RPG and fantasy elements again, which to me brought better social structure to the game too.
New. Because it’s new.
Naxx gear lasted 6 levels into TBC. So what you’re saying is raiding has been pointless since the start.

I mean, New WoW has more content… for better or worse.
I prefer in-the-middle WoW.
I enjoy QoL of Collections and the like. But I prefer the expansion style of Cataclysm and Mists.

You can’t go home again. I tried, and couldn’t do it.

Old.
i prefer old style of mmorpg’s in terms of working for my stuff i mean literally working for it like leveling not doing 1 quest and i dinged already type of bs. community, etc… i like the QoL the new wow offers so if i could combine the two i would.
Couldn’t say. My rose-colored glasses are way too thick for that level of objectivity.

[Do You Prefer Old WoW or New WoW?]
There seems to be less and less of a difference with every classic expansion released.
Old because it has that RPG and leveli… nah can’t do it
I like new current WoW because it’s new.

New WoW with some leanings towards visual/spatial design from the past.
Why? Because I’ve grown as a gamer. I look back on things that I thought “no way will I ever be decent at”, and now it’s easily approachable. I’ve started to branch out, as well. I find it interesting, the other genre of games out there.
I can’t see myself going back to spending 2 min to locate a node of sungrass while dinos criss-cross back and forth around the patch of tall grass where said node is… somewhere. I’d look upon that as a design flaw now. It was “challenging” back then.
What I do miss is community. I don’t feel that merges killed it, either. The Gamer community moved towards the belief that everything in the game is there so that they can enjoy the game - that includes you. Content needs to be one and done, and quickly. The MMO genre shrunk and the FPS mindset rose, to be simplistic.
And it’s no longer my first rodeo. You know, when it’s all fresh and new and you’re willing to generate all the energy in the world to fuel the fantasy? Well, that was then, and now it’s understood that it will take all the energy you have until you run dry and it doesn’t matter - so pace yourself or get out.
But the great thing is that I can have my cake and keep it too. You just need to hold onto your commitment to the project, and surround yourself with like minded people who become friends and like any commitment, be willing to make reasonable sacrifice for the greater good.
I love WoW, but the only thing that would make Old WoW enjoyable would be the company I keep, not the game itself. Whereas current WoW still contains content I like, and the company is a bonus.
It’s what works for me.

New, for the most part. Different specs had different heydays.
From an overall systems design, though, I tend to most enjoy the end of borrowed-power-heavy expansions in the small sliver of time they’ve finally managed to get their systems working before scrapping it and unlearning most lessons with the next expansion’s release.
I’d prefer more attention and relevance within the open world, but at the same time, I like content like Mythic+ (minus the occasional really terrible run) that is intrinsically enjoyable for me via more than just immersion or character fantasy.
From a midcore/casual play standpoint… MoP, Cata, and Legion were all pretty great for what I was doing at the time.
I feel like WoW has 3 eras, rather than a clear “old” and “new”.
Legacy WoW: Vanilla -> WotLK
Transitory WoW: Cata -> WoD
Modern WoW: Legion -> Shadowlands
If I had to choose one over the others… honestly it’s tough.
There’s too many non-design related things that go into how much I enjoyed (or didn’t enjoy) each era, and I don’t think I’m capable of judging them entirely objectively because of that. There’s also just the fact that the game went in SUCH a different direction after WotLK that its not really a matter of one design being better than the other – its just… different. And I have things I love about both.
I know this is a total non-answer. Sorry.

the problem is for me, it’s not a binary comparison.
if I could take the player I am now, and put myself in vanilla/bc, would it be as magical as it was to the player I was 15 years ago?
I prefer pre-Cata Azeroth and its dungeons. Pre-Cata characters are also my preference. Having a sack of soul shards on my lock and making sure I had plenty of food an ammo on my hunter (along with reagents for abilities of other classes) made things more realistic.

What’s the line? Between “Old” and “New” WoW.
Is Legion new WoW? Cause I enjoyed the crap out of Legion, more than majority of the other expansions so far and I’ve been playing since Cata.
BFA was pretty
and Shadowlands has potential, but is a bit
atm.
