Do you miss being an adventurer?

One of the funny things I found in BFA was that my character is being given alot of importance even though he hasn’t done anything xD.

This paladin is a boosted char and when i started the Zandalar questline i was immediately declared as the speaker of the horde, the greatest thing that happened to Zandalar, the champion etc and people started seeing me as messiah even though i just stepped in the continent xD.

Nothing bad in it but it felt funny as it has done nothing in previous expansions to be given such importance

This is one thing i miss about classic wow is just being an adventurer.

This is what i look forward in classic wow is just being an adventurer that starts from the bottom and works his way up to glory

What are your thoughts, do you miss being an adventurer or do you like the shift in the storyline since WOD where our character became important figures.

Do I miss it? Absolutely! The modern experience is completely devoid of character progression. I can still remember my first toon running around in what amounted to rags. I remember my first rewards as well as the quests that opened up a huge world for me. I have dabbled a bit with BFA and I can honestly say, I don’t recall anything of note. Compare that to my Classic experience…

I know it will never be the same but, the sense of adventure was still present during the demo. That was a great sign for things to come.

I used to be an adventurer like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee.

Getting it fixed dwarf for upcoming adventure in classic wow xD

I find it awkward actually to be centre point of everything xD. I just want to be nameless adventurer who does everything behind the scene and let important lore char take the charge

Did you do the proper thing and kill them off with chicken pox?

the story noticeably changed from being an everyday adventurer to THE HERO OF THE STORY a number of expansions ago (MOP?) and is a big difference between now and then. I’m looking forward to being one of the crowd again.

it started with WOD i think

Boosted characters are a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand you get to play with your friends and enjoy a class that you have an interest in. This is a great feature for so many players that have done the quests dozens of times.

On the other hand, you completely miss out on progression and the heroes journey. Poof you are an instant hero. I understand why people use the system but, I also see the downside once you do use it.

EXACTLY!!! thats what i felt xD

You described it perfectly haha

When everyone is a hero, No one is. It just feels better when we are all a bunch of adventurer’s trying to find our place in the world.

I agree, that is one of the major reasons I let my sub run out. The game felt as if everything was so hollow and meaningless. The hand holding with quest markers and having every npc treat you as if you were the sole savior of azeroth got really old, really quick.

I long for the days when I had to actually read the quest to figure out where to go to find the objectives. Even then, it was likely that you would get lost on the way or would find some side adventure as you searched for “the Stolen Silver!” When you did finally find the quest objective, there was still a high level of danger because it was guarded by lots of vicious raptors who were too strong to handle more than one at a time. So getting that stolen silver wasn’t guaranteed even when you knew where it was.

Contrast that with today…you pick up the quest, which gets marked on your map. You beeline to the objective, round up all the nearby mobs in a pack and AOE them down in 3 seconds. Done, no sense of danger, no sense of adventure, not even the possibility of getting lost and you are hailed as the Ultimate Extraordinary Hero of Everything!

Heck, even during BC, having a title like “Explorer” was a pretty solid accomplishment, especially if you saw it on a low level character.

Its one of the reasons I dont like retail. We went from being a random adventurer and sometimes elite fighting force for an army (classic, tbc, & wotlk) to now we are commanders with followers and the story revolves around our actions. I’m just like, “can I go back to collecting wendigo manes to make the inside of someone’s tank more comfortable?”. Also cut scenes. I LOATHE cutscenes. It’s my biggest gripe with monster hunter and why I won’t touch a final fantasy game.

It started towards the end of WotLK in all honesty.

The problem is that Blizzard started catering to the people who complained about how lore wise our raid kills were being “stolen” by important NPCs like Varian who has the credit for Onyxia.

So according to the story I’ve been there to defeat: The Lich King, Deathwing, Lei Shen, Garrosh, the Iron Horde, Archimonde, the Burning Legion, and the titan Argus. Every time a new threat to the world shows up, which is about every 2 years, I’ve been there to defeat it according to the way the story is written now(even if I haven’t personally done the raid).

At this point, Anduin should pretty much make me Supreme Allied Commander of all Alliance forces considering the feats that the story has attributed to me.

WoD was just when the questing started calling you a champion with voiced dialogue every 5 minutes, which unfortunately makes sense given the route they went with the player’s role in the story.

The great thing about Classic is all those feats will be taken away from the player and we’ll be back to being people just passing through lending a hand in the story.

I missed it as far back as Wrath, when the cartoonish Lich King kept following me around and making inadequate threats, when I’d be sent to Ysera, A’lar, and Alexstraza to try to save someone.

It was vaguely there in TBC once we were involved with stopping Illidan and Kael’thas, and Kael’thas again, and Brutallus - but at least raids were large groups of adventurers working together who would not have managed it alone, while the questing in Wrath was often solo, with us being the savior who stopped this or that puppet or side-plot of the Lich King.

The first you do at the start of the expansion is to go into a suicide mission to stormwind to rescue their princess and the other dude. You did something for them.

Gets in the turbo lift Anyone remember when we were explorers?

I def enjoyed the being just another cog in the grand machine of the Horde or Alliance approach they did with van and the early expansions in contrast to being the grand machine and the Horde/Alliance feeling like a sidekick for your character.

This goes back I feel to a comparison between Jyn Erso from Star Wars: Rogue One and Rey from Star Wars 7-9 in which Rey is perfect in everything she does and cannot be wrong at all, probably could single-handedly take on the whole first order by herself (your typical mary-sue) whereas with Jyn, she isn’t perfect and has obvious flaws and in her mission, needs the help of others to make it a success (sounds familiar?) also, she is just another piece of the picture rather then being the picture.

By removing all the grandeur and perfection from the player character you are left with someone who has to prove themselves to the world and leaves areas for them to build on in contrast to someone who was just given perfection which leaves no room to build and becomes a rather dull and boring character.

So in short, yes…I am ecstatic to be a nobody again

Thankfuly we have to Nathanos who reminds us all the time that we are just a guy who thinks is a hero while at Nathanos eyes the true is that we are just some crapy adventurer with a distortioned self image.

I recall commenting back then that on at least 5 separate occasions The Lich King told that the next time he sees me he’s going to kill me.
