Do you lose appearence from upgrading gear?

Topic.

I swear I had the normal gold wings (shoulders) on my priest, upgraded the item past 424 and now they are red. I thought sweet I have both.

Nope I only have red now.

That sucks - now I have a 428 shoulder slot and cant need roll on the normal shoulders again (too high ilvl)

Nope.

You need to make sure it’s truly bound before upgrading, so just put it on (or mog it).

Yeah I lost my heroic ashkandur appearance because I upgraded it before equipping it. Truly awful design. For shame.

I definitely had it bound, as I was wearing it the whole time.

I don’t have any other shoulders

You gain the appearance on receiving the item. Equiping it is irrelevant.

If it still had a tradeable timer on it, I think you may lose the appearance when upgrading.

Nah, definitely have to equip it if the item is tradeable within that 4 hour window. It’s awful design, I won the item and upgraded it and lost a rare appearance. For shame.

Sounds like a bug to me. I’ll do some tests with my healer, anything I get should be a new appearance, that i’ll then upgrade. What about new appearances you convert using catalyst?

It’s not a bug and blizzard will not even give you the appearance via ticket or anything. It’s working as intended. See article below.

https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/338504#:~:text=Upgrading%20an%20item%20that%20still,the%20item%20before%20upgrading%20it.

It’s a true disgrace to the game that blizzard allowed this to occur. Missed out on solid items I won’t be able to get for a long while.

Well that is officially dumb.

Oh…come on, a ‘disgrace’

It’s definitely a bug, but I think I understand what’s happening. When you loot a new appearance is does get added to your collections, but I suppose it’s just a temporary state while the item is still tradable. Then, when you equip, upgrade, or mog the appearance, eliminating the tradability, you often see it get added to your collection again.

Since Heroic Ashkandur is 4/5 Hero when you get it, upgrading it once changed it’s appearance and then bound that new appearance to the character. But the previous appearance was never “fully” collected.

Cease policing my words- I say what I mean and I mean what I say. Worry about censoring yourself and leave me alone.

I won’t, sorry. I’m pedantic and am calling out using exaggerated verbiage to add emphasis to your argument.

You need to equip or transmog them before you upgrade them. If they still have the blue “you can trade this” text on them when you go to upgrade them, you MUST equip or transmog them first and make sure it’s in your collections.

If you upgrade while that text is there, the system does the upgrade, THEN it removes the blue text to bind them to you and add to collections. So you don’t get the original appearance.

Not if it still has the blue text on it.

Edit to add: this was covered already. Apologies!

Hopefully catalyst can provide me the normal appearance back… not sure how else I can get it until this becomes legacy content or I get a Sark token.

No.

If you get M+ shoulders or Fyrakk Assault ones, you can use the Catalyst on those to get the appearance. You’ll just need to upgrade the Fyrakk gear to 415. But if you catalyze them first, you’ll get the LFR coloration and then upgrade them to 415 to get the Normal coloration.
