Do you have to have WoW installed to see WoW Classic options?

So I get that you have to have a subscription to get a Beta invite. Do you have to have WoW installed in order to see the WoW Classic invite and options in the launcher? Will I be able to play Classic without wasting disk on retail?

The launcher right now has you simply select the account from the drop down box, like you would if you were going PTR or retail.

Yet to be seen if they segregate classic as it’s own game at the game select screen on the launcher. Classic will have to have its own download, as it is it’s own game.

no, it’s a separate game within wow you will see a secondary option to download/swap right above the word “play”

I never tried to have the PTR installed without the current retail game. I know Classic has to be a separate install but I don’t know how the launcher will cope with it if retail is not installed (either now or at launch).

They only share the launcher. They don’t share assets. So unless that is some weird restriction blizzard makes to force people to have one game to play another, you won’t have to download both games.

Presumably no, you do not need to install it or log into it. You simply need to have a WOW account and add game time to it.

That is based in part on how they did the Demo during BlizzCon as well as how the Beta is working - separate clients downloaded. Blizzard could change it up for the actual release and we won’t know until right before the day they make the name reservations available.

They do actually share some assets. The Data folder is shared between clients now.

@OP You only need to have World of Warcraft installed to make the download of Classic beta smaller. But if you don’t want to install Wow only to delete it you should be able to just go straight ahead and install Classic beta.

It’ll probably have to download over 30 GB tho.
