I remember mages always kind of pressuring me for a tip. They even put it in their trade chat ad!
“Portal to blah blah blah, accepting tips!”
It always made me feel guilty if I didn’t give that Gnome one gold or some silver.

Of course.
I can always afford to give them a 1 copper tip.
Ofc. If it’s a Male mage I give them a fashion tip. Lose the dress and put some pants on!
Cover the cost of the reagent + a bit for time
reagent + a bit. I tip for water and food because of how annoying it is for a mage to stop and create someone 4 stacks of crap. I also find buffing people who buff me annoying. I remember on a paladin I was leveling I got so sick of giving people might or wisdom I started to not pay attention . I gave a lot of priests might…
So I just looked it up on WoWhead. It costs them 20 silver to make a portal! + 10 second cast time.
So, if they do portals for 1 gold. They make 8 silver a second. That’s a potential 480 silver per minute. That’s over 28,800 silver an hour potential earning for a portal business.
Those darn mages are going to be running the banks and auction houses!
Depends on what for, 55 water / Food, for sure if i’m not in a dungi with them, portals. I seldom use em, unless again in dungi or raid, but if it’s out in like IF and i need my lvl 10 human to hit up darn i’ll do a regents + like 40 silver.
That’s why you include the tip in the cost.
The portal just doesn’t open without a tip. Regs are expensive, travel is long, and I am doing you the favor.
If you think that mages don’t deserve tips for conjured food and water, I want you to level up a mage to 60, hunt down the final food tome, and then be accosted to stop and make several stacks of food and water which totally depletes your mana bar and may even require a drink.
And this happens multiple times a day, every single day.
Their business ins’t gonna that booming. lol
No 1g in my trade box per person, no portal.
I don’t do food unless I can make a stack at a time. Outside of dungeons, those aren’t free.
No, because I disagree with America’s whole concept of tips.
(See Mr Pink’s explanation from Reservoir Dogs for simplified reference)
If they are charging for portals, and I need one, I will gladly pay the requested price. Even if it’s more than the cost of the reagent.
Agreed. Put the whole price of the portal in the transaction.
You forgot that mana has to be gained back, mana = life for mages.
At the start of a server I would ask the full 1g for a portal no matter what lvl u are. Further in I would consider lower prices for lower levels, like 30 - 50 silver. If some one comes up to me for a portal and just trades me a rune I’ll instanlty ignore him. Ofc at the end of a dungeon or after having completed some q with others I would do it for free.
“tips appreciated” means “pay me what you want, but please for the love of god pay me”.
I find that some players just expect other players to drop what they are doing and help them - immediately!
Expect me to do this once I have been paid for my time and annoyance factor.
What I do is buy a stack of port mats and use that as a tip. Normally I get a reply of : “dude, that saves me the trip and I was getting low. THANKS!”
When I ask again later, they always offer to help.
Now I will add, if I desperately need a port, and no mages are advertising, and I seek one out to ask/beg for a port, yeah, you gotta offer something.
it is 1g per portal. 25%+ of vendor price for w/e level food/drink you are buying +tips. Free for dungeon/raid parties.

Mage FTW
Oh! That’s really smart.
