Not really, no. SL very nearly killed WoW for me. Obviously on an OOC level it’s canon, but IC none of my characters know anything at all about it, and I do my best to avoid interacting with anything from it.
I’m glad there’s people that like it, but the lore just isn’t for me.
It’s the Season 8 of Game of Thrones: best forgotten as if it never ever happened (musing over the majority of responses). Yeah, it happened, but it’s better if we all pretended it did not.
My main issue with it is it really did ruin a TON of lore without showing one iota of respect to that lore as it ripped it apart. All that stuff about shamanism and ancestor spirits and loa’s and ghosts and etc that entire cultures and plots were built around?
Nah, Blizzard decided that wasn’t edgy enough so hence Shadowlands, turns out we all get sucked into one of a few various “afterlives” instead of the old lore where your ancestor might be be watching over you as a young orc or troll shaman, or maybe you saw your nelf ancestor at the Moon Well and his spirit spoke to yo---- NOPE. Forget about all that!
What a slap in the face.
I’m so glad I dinged cap and then bounced on that one. What a heap. Fun to farm for transmogs but useless otherwise.
Not entirely true, the Tauren heritage touched a bit on Shadowlands. The spirits of the Tauren can in fact still watch over and communicate. Now not during the Maws attack. But those before Argus’s death and after the Jailors defeat could still do this.
We see it in the Heritage quest and some quests in the Maw with Baine.
Very interesting answers, I see a lot of people still feel burned by shadowlands. Which is understandable, but I have to say I think a lot of that is the main plot. If we leave out the main story quest with the jailer’s master plan, The venthyr, maldraxxi, kyrians, night fae are all very cool thematically and the shadowlands itself is cool thematically as well albeit running into some problems regarding the heritage of certain classes and races.
Some areas, sure.
Many more were butchered. Thus I ignore it. I’m not going to scrap 30 years of lore because Ion hired the biggest Sylvannas simp alive to head up the writing team.
I thought Nathanos-whats-his-real-name was the lead writer during that period? Regardless, I’m still not throwing out 30 years of lore because of bad decisions made by a handful. SL absolutely crapped on a ton of lore and it sucked.
Whether we like it or not, Shadowlands is canon to the world of Azeroth. Those events happened.
Whether your character was involved in them or not is another story entirely. Personally, my character has never left Azeroth in her personal canon. She did not go to Outland, to Draenor, to Argus, or to the Shadowlands. Events surrounding those expansions are still canon to the world, but my girl wasn’t a part of them.
Knowing that our death is a means to fund the afterlife’s construction projects may rub people the wrong way. I think it’s cool that my character experienced it but knows never to talk about it, unless it’s with others who have also seen it.
