My builds are my own but I also know and expect that I am sub-optimal but I would rather play my way.

It depends, really. If I’m using something and it works, then I will usually go with my gut. But if what I’m doing doesn’t seem to be working well, I will go to outside sources for a build.

I copy them from WoWhead or Icy-veins but then I tweak them to suit my wants and needs. I like the Special Delivery talent even though it isn’t optimal so I swap between that and the AoE wind ability a lot for example.
I’ll check Icy-Veins just to make sure that I don’t miss something really important for my class. But I agree that their builds are targeted toward end-game group content, which I don’t do. So I will absolutely take QoL stuff (like extra healing talents for squishy DPS toons, etc.) over something they recommend for DPS gains.

I always do my own talent builds, and tweak them as necessary. Only time I’ve copied a build from a guide was right after the change to survival hunter. Once I got the hang of melee I branched off.
People can do what they want but I feel copying builds others have min/maxed to death is boring and way less fun.

Bit of both. I use Icy veins as a reference really, more of a suggestion, rather then following it religiously. Because i play what plays better for me, then what gives me a bunch of DPS.
A bunch of DPS can be either no buttons, or buttons that are extremely situational, or some sort of weird combo that i wouldn’t see myself getting comfortable with.
Use to build mine but when blizzard cut char lvl in half i copy now .

if you are suboptimal then do you really understand your talent choices?
I always do my own builds. Sure, they may never be the meta, but I don’t enjoy using a lot of the talents the meta builds say to use. I like making something that’s comfortable and enjoyable for me and then doing minor tweaks here and there.
Mix of both.
I copy things down and I read up on the spells / change up to see the comparisons.
I then pick what I like.
I google " easy mode". Result #1 is an Icy Veins link. I click on that, copy that build and import it. It pretty much chooses all the passive talents. Most classes have too many abilities (and thus keys to press) anyway. Passives all the way.
is this the best? Absolutely not. Is it sufficient? For me, sure.
Particularly if you try and play more than one class, it’s difficult with the new talent system. Don’t get me wrong: I like the new system. But druid in 10.0.5 had massive changes. It broke my previous builds so I had to start again. 10.0.7 broke ret paladin. Same thing.
There’s not really as much choice in these talent trees as it first appears. So many choices are mandatory, obvious or unavoidable (to get to talents below). For some classes I just like that you get key abilities earlier. For example, Hunter has Multi-Shot, Kill Shot, Kill Command and Barbed Shot by level 22 or so Previously it was much later. I like this. But at the same time, there’s not really any viable alternative to the above path.

Is the meta the most enjoyable playstyle? To each their own but I don’t find higher numbers on damage meters to be more enjoyable.

Build it myself then look and see if the spreadsheet dorks deviate any from me and if so, what is the difference and why? I have slightly different builds for certain bosses and dungeons that I’ll even occasionally remember and swap to prior to doing that boss or dungeon.

lol - still alive and yeah, just got back home from there. Super sick, blerg. They gave me four different scrips on top of having to take some otc meds. Blleeehhhh.
I get to just be zombied out on meds for a bit tho, so I have that going for me.
