I really don’t see how someone could disagree.
This feels like some kind of bait thread but yes it’s obvious that classic, TBC and wrath had more classic RPG and MMO elements than what we currently have, partly because the original dev team largely played older MMOs and used that as their point of reference when making content.
They were aware of the esports issue growing during wrath but didn’t want to shun that part of the player base and it’s grown to the point that they balance entirely now around the top players and care less as times goes on about making a genuinely fun game.
classic is more of a walking simulator than an RPG
I don’t agree with anyone or Anything but myself
And a dying rpg, dying and walking, walking and dying.
Define RPG
You have to first understand what makes a game a RPG to the person before you can understand why they believe wow is a RPG.
Yeah there are definitely more roleplaying elements in Classic. In retail you magically learn your spells, know how to use every weapon to maximum capability, and it doesn’t feel like I’m improving as a character. In Classic you’re character improves their skills, has to learn them, has to manage resources better, and so on.
I’d say Classic feels like a more involved rpg in the way you develop your character in how it gains in power over time. Retail is a more end game flashy type rpg. Or that’s my view on it anyway.
Retail feels more like an RPG, classic feels more like a mistake.
Classic feels more like D&D and Retail feels like AD&D.
What exactly was so rpg about classic that retails lacking? Most people seem to point to things like weapon skills, talent trees, ect but, dang i’ve been playing rpgs since i could hold a controller and i dang sure don’t remember having to build talent trees for ryu in any breath of fire, training my gun skill as rudy in wild arms, or who i went on a date with in the gold saucer choosing my final weapon in ff7.
I feel like it’s hard for me to say that any version of WoW feels like it has an abundance of RPG, especially when comparing it to the classics like Baldur’s Gate, KotoR, Fallout 1/2, etc.
Classic does have a significantly more enjoyable leveling game in my opinion, though.
The rpgs they are referring to predate controllers.
Way back, before nintendo was just a company that made playing cards, rpgs were pen and paper things you did at the dinner table with friends.
I’ve played pen and paper rpgs and I can’t say I see any significant reason why say classic wow, and current wow are much more different than those. I guess you could say classics closer to dungeons and dragons because even hitting enemies with your spells/skills can become difficult if you don’t roll the right dice?
You obviously do not understand what RPG means…
The same RPG qualities of the game are in Retail as in Classic >.>
They are wildly different, but that’s one aspect where there’s nearly zero difference.
Classic feels like an adventure
Retail feels like a theme park amusement ride
No, I don’t agree
Both feel equally like a rpg to me. Classic is just more tedious and boring.
I would say classic is more of a watching paint dry simulator.
Can’t say I agree.
Classic is more grindy if that’s what you’re getting at? More time required to build up the character as you level with them. Retail is more end game focused and more balanced.
They’re both RPGs but built differently. Classic is a “been there done that” game. Something that can’t even be replicated to the original Vanilla WoW. It’s good that they introduced it as it keeps alot of the “the game was better back in my day” players still paying and playing the game.
I definitely disagree.
Not really. To me, slow clunky combat ≠ RPG experience
That said, I do feel like Vanilla -> Wrath they built the game to have immersion. Now world design feels like an afterthought where they can generate a very formulated theme park experience to lead you max level. Retail is missing RPG elements, but Classic’s combat system isn’t one of them.
