The Ethereals really strike me as an artifact of the old cosmological lore. You know, back when a “Void Lord” was just a really big Voidwalker than could nom nom a planet, Galactus style.

Ethereals FTW! The Brokers look like they are based off that guy in south Africa who shot and killed his girlfriend through the bathroom door.
I bet you’re right.
Thats one of the reasons I didn’t like Shadowlands. The way Blizz phrased the afterlife was really weak. It just seemed like more of the living world. Meh, poor design.

Ethereals are far more interesting to me. More enigmatic, with a more sinister edge.

Brokers are executed better but that’s an artifact of them being in a more recent expansion that highlights minor characters in a way the original content didn’t
Ethereals are a much better concept from a much better part of the lore and with a cooler design
Orcs in space is better than necromancers in Bone Valhalla imo

Yeah.
It’s a bit cringe. The Brokers mentioning the existence of the Legion and then shrugging their shoulders and saying they think they’re no big deal is Danuser being a bit of a cringelord and trying to throw out Metzen’s toys and say “No, NO MY bad guy is the big spooky bad guy! Your bad guy is poo-doo!”
It’s like… just stop dude. You want to do your own thing Danuser, fine, but trying to one-up Metzen is just so goofy.
I’m really hoping that backlash to Shadowlands and the focus on more old-school elements in DF leads to the Ethereal coming back and usurping the role of “Cosmic Power Broker”.
A broker is just an ethereal with puffy pantaloons.

As much as I hate to give FF14 props their bad guy Emet Selch was very well done. He was just another bad guy that we’ve seen like 3 or 4 of already and had dealt with, but he was very well written. Problem is, is that Danuser is just bad at his job.
