Do we know dracthyr naming conventions yet?

I’m not in the alpha so I can’t see if there are any dracthyr NPCs running around, but I’d like to know ahead of time so I can reserve a lore-appropriate name. I hope it’s not -ion.

If I had to guess, I’d imagine it will be similar to the various Dragonflights.

As we’ve seen plenty of red, bronze, and blue dragons, and a handful of green dragons, their naming conventions are pretty well known:

  • Red: -strasz for males, -strasza for females
  • Blue: -gos for males, -gosa for females
  • Bronze: -ormu for males, -ormi for females
  • Green: -us for males, -ra for females

Mind you, exceptions to those naming rules do exist. Every flight seems to have at least one name that breaks the typical naming conventions, generally by not using the usual suffix for their flight and gender. For example, the Greens have Emeriss and Desharin, the Blues have Haleh and Sapphiron, the Bronze have Chronormu (let’s leave it at that with Chromie and not discuss that ridiculous kettle of fish any further)

The Black Dragonflight is not nearly as obvious and doesn’t seem to have firm rules. Over the years we’ve had names such as Fahrad, Darkblaze, Nalice, Razormaw, and Serinar. Some of the names deal with various synonyms for black or fire, or are just straightforward and intimidating sounding names.

That being said, we have seen the following at some points:

  • Black: -ion or -ian for males, -ia for females

If you’re looking for names that are as lore friendly as possible while also hinting at which flight they came from, then try to match known suffixes with words, traits, synonyms relating to what each flight oversees.

  • Red (Creation/Life): Solestrasza (this might be one of the harder ones if you go too literal)
  • Blue (Magic/Arcane): Thaumagos, Wizdragosa
  • Bronze (Time): Tempormi, Eonormu
  • Green (Nature/Dreams): Fantaus, Phantasra

As for the Black Dragonflight, I’m not going to jump too deep into potential names for them as they seem to break the rules with their names the most. If in doubt, just come up with something that has an intimidating sound to it.

Dammit, I hate when vulpera provide good information. Now I’m obliged to thank you, and I am, but I’m not happy about it.

They usually end in “uff” and start with “P”.

Hey now, don’t stereotype an entire group of players just because the race happened to attract a bunch of weirdos.
FWIW, my goblin and gnome engineers want to set the creepy ones on fire as much as you do

Just give them dragon names, like Daralex or Strianax.

You’re right, I should be more aware of the minority. It’s not your fault “the others” exist.

Me reading this and realizing for the 11 years I played I hadn’t picked up on Blue or Green naming conventions.

Another thing that tends to show up in the naming conventions for them is that not only is the area of concern for their aspect often included in their names, but various words that refer to the color of the dragonflight, or items/substances characterized by that color, also turn up quite often.

A few examples from the game:
Azuregos, Azure = Blue.
Onyxia, Onyx = A Black Gemstone.
Sapphiron, Sapphire = A Blue Gemstone.
Verdisa, Verde = Green
Emeriss, Emerald = A Green Gemstone.
Ebyssian, Ebon = Black, Abyss = Black/Void

The Red Dragonflight also has a tendency to use names that refer to power, nobility, or heroism… Alexstraza for example refers to Alexander The Great… and there is one named Tyranastraza even… Tyrana~, meaning Tyrant.

The few names I have seen of them from snippets of datamined text show they use conventions different from the normal Flights, but the few names we have seen are not enough to intuit any real rules.

They could also be placeholder names…

I’m assuming it will follow Dragonflight naming conventions most likely the Black Dragonflight which is -ion for Male dragons and -ia for Female dragons like I’m planning on naming my Dracthyr Syrendria
Currently using a human hunter to hold the name and test mail transmog on whilst using a Vulpera Shaman to go get transmog :stuck_out_tongue:

So far the ones I have seen are pretty varied. Examples from people talking about datamined quest text…

Hidden just in case no one wants names spoiled, even with no context Emberthal, Viridia, Azurathel, Sarkareth, Cindrethresh, Devishian, and Kedothi.

So honestly, they seem pretty flexable.

I posted the ones I saw in Azure Span while questing in another thread:

I don’t remember the colors of the first 4 I found, but the last ones, that all end in -os, are all blue dragons.

Kruthix
Iristimat
Iristella
Althanus
Argalos
Vernagos
Saphos
Cynegos
Portos

The Blue ones do seem to follow the naming conventions, just dropping the g. The others don’t seem to follow the conventions - so it may have to do with if those dragons identify with the dragonflight color they’re a part of? Like, Azure Span is all about Kirin Tor and the Blue Dragons, so it makes sense the blue dracthyr we meet there would somewhat follow those conventions.

This is reinforced by the fact there’s more than 5 colors of dracthyr you can choose from - like, why would purple dracthyr follow twilight naming conventions when as far as we know,o they know nothing about them. Just for instance. Or if they add a proper pink one, why would they follow chromatic? Etc.

I think they’re prolly trying to leave it open enough that a player can pick a name they like, or follow the rules of the Flights, and both look in place. Makes sense. Gives people who like to conform to naming conventions a bit more flexibility and choice, while not making them feel like they’re going too far off base.

Thanks everyone, this is helpful. Shame there’s no central naming scheme but I suppose it makes sense dracthyr would identify more strongly with matching colors.

I kinda wish Blizz would do something similar to what Square does with FF14, and just put out a little post detailing racial naming conventions. They give a little lore, and go over and differences there might be in the race because of preference, tribe, or gender. It’s nice.
