I know there are generally 7 new zones in Cata, but the vanilla kalimdor and eastern kingdoms also have some geographical changes.
That being said, are all the available questlines in vanilla zones still in their vanilla state? Or are they more or less integrated into Cata or even TBC and WotLK?
I can already think of goblins and worgens zones… are those zones already there prior to cata changes? I want to clear the entire game as chronological as possible, however years it will take me.
Lots of them have been deleted, unfortunately.
There are definitely some taken out. The Linken quest is one of them. I think some of the older class quests were taken out too.
So I think the best way to approach vanilla zones is to complete them after I finish TBC and WotLK but before I start the new Cata zones.
Are there any new Cata zones? Or did Cata just change existing zones? For example the dam broke in Loch Modan, leaving a landscape and a smaller lake.
A lot of the old quests are still there, but I think some of them have been simplified and other quests have been removed.
If you really want to play the Vanilla quest lines, I think you’ll have to go play Classic WoW.
Yeah. If you are just set to experience the chronological story (and I’m assuming this is not your first character) you could play Classic, then swap to retail to play through TBC (unless the TBC servers have been released by then) and then Wrath, swap back to Cata old world zones, then progress into MoP and move forward.
I’m not really sure how experience/leveling would look through all that, but with Chromie time it is probably possible. Might get tricky when you try to juggle zones like Desolace with zones like Hyjal, though.
But to answer the original question, Classic is the only way to really see the ‘vanilla’ quests. Pretty much everything was updated in Cata, with some chains completely removed.
As someone who completed every quest in the game pre-Cata, and then did them all again post-Cata, hardly any of the original quests remain at all. With the exception of some starting areas, every zone was completely reimagined.

A lot of the Barrens quests are still there. You still go to Crossroads and kill zevras and so on. However almost all the quests around Razor Hill were changed due to the landscape changes where big areas got flooded. So all the ones in vanilla where you went out and hunted the quillboar tribes have been removed, although the ones around Crossroads are still there. The only way now to experience Vanilla’s original set up is to play Classic.
alas thats not really doable. legally anyways
