Do the meters ever give you DPS anxiety?

Like for me I usually top out around 5k DPS on most fights that aren’t sun king (seriously Fk Sun king as a shadow priest)

Raid bots says I should top out around 5k DPS in perfect patchwerk style fights. So I’m pretty much where I need to be for my gear lvl.

But when you go in and you have 5-6 people above you in the meters even though I KNOW mentally that they have a higher ilvl and SHOULD be doing more DPS than me, but still looking at them and seeing so many others above me just irks me greatly.

Anyone else feel this way?

I basically use them for determining whether or not I was doing my rotation properly. Details! has a “streamer” plugin that if configured properly, can display a real time DPS indicator, and it’s pretty freaking accurate too as it mirrors what the main Details! core addon captures. This way I don’t need a meter open when I’m in combat - I can just glance at the realtime DPS number and see if I’m in need of improving.

No, though I do not pay attention to such things anyways.

it makees me want to play better

ofc due to class or fight design, some classes should never be higher than others(for example, boomkin overall vs. DPS warrior overall on Council), so I just compare myself to logs of people who play my class/spec. but it is nice to to play extremely well and beat someone whose class is suppsoed to be better

If you can’t do more DPS then don’t worry about it. BUT, you can measure other ways that you have more skill, and that’s number of interrupts or amount of avoidable damage taken.

I just use the meters to measure my performance. Although I really enjoy when there is a same spec person in the raid so I can compare and tweak my gameplay to make improvements.

Anxiety, no. They give me a mini competition to win which motivates me to try harder.

Trying to top the DPS meters is pretty much my favorite thing to do in WoW.

yes, thats why I play fire mage.

Only thing I’ve noticed about meters is that it was easiest to get near the top on a warlock and considerably worse as feral, so now I’m immune to anxiety as the game is not balanced and there’s nothing I can do about that.

Disable dps meters in combat. No joke. You’ll do more dps.

Taking your eyes off the fight, or your rotation, even for half a second, will cause you to lose dps.

Looking at the meter and seeing people above you won’t increase your dps. That’s where the anxiety comes from.

Just turn off the meters and do your thing. You will pump.

Just keep in mind that there are few “Patchwerk” fights. For a more realistic idea I sim Patchwerk/Light Movement/Heavy Movement and that gives me a sense of what range I should be falling into.

Oh, no. Wait. I’m a healer now so RaidBots is pointless. :crystal_ball:

But if you’re dps - it’s fantastic!

Just remember to pair your usage of RaidBots with Warcraft Logs. Learn to grab a comparison log of someone playing 1k better than you at your ilvl. That way you have a realistic goal to shoot for, against someone who is just a bit better than you are, at this moment.

The only caveat is your raid group/comp. Sometimes you’ll have to do things that other runs don’t because of their comp. So if you are in a small run, filter for size and time.

Best wishes to you. It’s really enjoyable to see yourself improve!

I agree with this advice. There is a setting to fade out when you are in combat. Toggle that!

Whew. Listen to this guy. He’s got the parses to back it up.

What I like to do is go in and outdps the Fire Mage because Arcane is actually extremely good on single target but people use Arcane Barrage way too much.

Use the anxiety to fuel your damage

Haha, those are all old. I haven’t raided in like a month because my guild split up. I do appreciate the kind words though!

Is this anxiety or motivation?

I only off-spec DPS at this point, but even still DPS meters still cause anxiety although it’s not for the usual reasons, lol

What grinds my gears is how constantly my buddies focus solely on DPS meters and don’t notice contextually what’s happening with fights. On top of that, they’ve traditionally been “meta” junkies and for the longest time…

It took some fighting on my part, but in my own pugging I started seeing how amazing Warlocks and Warriors are right now and only just recently finally started getting them to accept 'em.
