With big name WOW streamers like BellularGaming and AsmongoldTV covering WOW for so long, voicing past disappointments and future hopes for WOW, and then promoting games like Ashes of Creation, New World and even the game studio called Dream Haven…
Can or do Streamers make or break WOW?
A lot of my gameplay experiences come coupled with opinions from various streamers so I’m curious.
I think the game is to the point where it doesn’t matter, the backbone of the audience doesn’t care about the streamers I don’t think. I doubt they’ll ever “break” WoW.
They probably will be important to expanding the userbase though.
Even without streamers WoW has a solid layer base that other mmos can only dream of having. It’s the new games that need streamers to give it attention. Sad but that is how a game’s popularity is judged now for some reason.
Streamers, all of them regardless of preference, are the only thing keeping the game relevant and from sliding into a niche for a small group of people.
I think they indirectly do a job of cycling people back into the game every now and then and that is good.
As someone who doesn’t watch streamers nor care what they think or do, I play what games give me enjoyment. I’m sure there are plenty of others like me. If i’m dissatisfied with the game i’ll leave then, not because a streamer is moaning and crying to their little “fans”.
Some people want what streamers are offering, it’s why they can financially support what they do.
I think very few streamers can make a living off a game that’s not “big” enough, though. So it’s more that the bigger a game is, the more it can support streamers.
I think they make convenient scapegoats for people to blame about problems they don’t like, which is unfortunate.
It certainly could mean you could do better but it could also mean, like in this case, that your game belongs to a dead/not popular genre. And so self-promoting by the community is beneficial to create and maintain interest and support continued development.
They don’t make or break, but they certainly have their role to play. Asm#ng#ld didn’t even get his caterpillar. Lots of people aren’t into the game at the level that they care about streamers.
When all the major streamers and youtubers shifted from Fortnite to Apex Legends, Fortnite kept trucking along with a solid playerbase, and now they’re back on top. Streamers and Youtubers DO have some influence, but generally I think many of them only have any influence during high hype time (game release, new expansion, feature, etc), and then fade into obscurity throughout the slow times when people are actually in the game playing the content.
All those streamers and youtubers have their opinions and I’ll have mine. It’s certainly interesting to get another person’s perspective, but at the end of the day the way I enjoy the game is usually different from how another person enjoys the game, so I don’t really care what doom and gloom or hype they try to push.
