Maybe I’ve overly picky, but out of all of the big MMOs, WoWs music feels the most lacking to me. It just feels uninspired and generic. Do most players like it?
It’s chill. Leveling through Eversong Forest with music on is literally an antidepressant.
There’s a large spectrum so it’s hard to say, WoW’s music tends to be atmospheric tho.
Ex) Going to Howling Fjord for the first time
For the longest time ,before Cata and the changes I really loved the music in Shadowfang Keep.
Along the way it became Northrend specifically Grizzly Hills.Somewhat similar in Stormheim.
In game music hasn’t really caught my hear enough to want it on now and then since BFA.
WoWs music, for me is good for its ambience, with certain tracks really hitting when combined with certain areas.
I think after Cataclysm WoW’s music direction became less about specific areas and more thematic, reaching it’s zenith with I want to say BFA, where there’s an overarching musical track that is reused in a lot of the zones, encounters and cinematics, which makes the score as a whole sound a bit samey.
An easy example would be to listen to the main theme of Dragonflight, then go through the rest of the soundtrack and see how many times you hear that same uplifting beat. This wasn’t used as often before BFA I feel. The only other time I really noticed this was how often Invincible was used throughout WotLK, but even then it was really primarily used when dealing with Arthas.
I quite like it yes. The dragonriding theme. Entering Thunderbluff. Zoning into Zuldazar. Castle Nathria. The azure span. Anduin’s theme!
Bangers all around us.
One whole other message just to say KARAZHAN!
There are indeed many beautiful soundtracks. If I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be Anduin’s Theme. I like to listen to it on YouTube every now and then.
“World of Warcraft: Legion - Anduins Theme - Neal Acree ft. Julie Elven”
I honestly have not played wow with the sound on since panda land so I couldn’t tell you.
I always really liked WoW’s music… for the most part. The only time I recall that I didn’t care for it was the Maw:
Dun DUN DUNNNN!!
“Really? That was the best ya’ll could do? The Dramatic Gopher tune?? M’kay.”
I would describe WOW’s soundtrack as “mostly good, with some absolutely exceptional pieces here and there”. I particularly love the Waking Shores music this expansion. It really fits both the discovery aspect for us, and the “returning to a childhood home many years later” aspect for the dragons.
FFXIV is kind of in the opposite situation…I find most of the zone music generic and uninspired, but it has much better boss themes than WOW does.
When Vanilla released the soundtrack was pretty much up there at the top for MMOs. The only competition was SWG which obviously had music from Lucasfilm. EQ was way more generic than WoW. Since then other MMOs have copied the formula. By this point it’s difficult for WoW to reinvent its own wheel, and MMOs like ESO have arguably gotten better at developing consistently better soundtracks.
I think WoW does ambient music the best, but there’s some really good hits in the mix like Invincible and Lament of the Highborne.
What I enjoy the most I guess is that they use the music to set the tone or help tell the story as it unfolds. It is very dynamic.
Listened to it in the early days. It was nice that each zone had its own music. Turned if off in 2009 though and haven’t listened to it since. If I want music, then I would listen to my own playlists.
Many of the zones have great music. I do think WoW lacks memorable storyline music. I can’t think of any score that was relevant only to a specific xpac or storyline, which to me can be important in delivering a big emotional punch at a key moment.
I listen to it on Spotify very frequently!!
Yep…WOW does ambient much better, FFXIV does boss music much better.
Really? The Maw reminded me of Mars, the Bringer of War.
By the way, did everyone forget that BC’s Hellfire Peninsula is an arrangement of Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 27?
When Russell Brower was music director the music was epic. He left near the end of Legion, and the music since has been decent, but not amazing as it once was. Dragonflight is the first time I’ve noticed them recycle music from past expansions.
