Do I need expertise and hit for PVP?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if hit and expertise matters in pvp too in Wrath Classic? Or are those stats for pve only?

Thanks

It’s relevant for PvP

Every class requires PvP hit but it’s way lower than the hit requirements for PvE.

Just google the classes hit requirements

You’re goona want hit cap as #1 stat weight similar to pve, the amount you’ll need will be lower, typically 5% for melee. You don’t need as much expertise because players can’t dodge / parry if you’re behind the target unlike bosses. Don’t gem for expertise but if you have it on gear not the end of the world

This always makes me laugh. You know what happens when both you and your opponent are trying to attack each other from behind? You end up facing each other. Also pvpers will often stand with their backs against a wall.

he’s still right, though. you don’t need as much expertise as you do for pve. basically, expertise is a fine stat, but you don’t gear as aggressively for it.

you can’t parry/dodge when casting, cc is huge, the ability to get behind people to use a big move is a skill (unlike PvE where most damage comes from auto’s)…expertise helps you land attacks when you might not have, so it’s good for the mediocre players like me, but skilled arena rats are better with timing and predicting other players.

hit rating is still important, just the cap is lower against players vs PvE bosses.

Every class should max hit, which is 4% for spells or 5% for physical. No real need to get more as it isn’t used unless you dual wield or the enemy has bonus avoidance (blood elf is good example). Even then, there isn’t much value in going past the base cap.

Expertise is different. It only affects melee swings. It is obviously important for a warrior/rogue… but that’s about it. It is totally useless for spell casters and not too useful for a hunter since it doesn’t benefit shooting. Hybrids that use melee+magic would get a benefit to their melee, but not magic. For these folks, it is nice when it’s there, but not something to enchant or gem for because other stats are better.

The cap vs players is the same 5% as hit, but ideally as frost or unholy you’d only ever have what you get from gear, talents, or race bonuses. This means you probably only have 5-10. You should never enchant or gem for it because STR, affecting the entire class, is better.

Blood is the ONLY build where stacking expertise makes sense because it actually focuses on physical attacks (and has armor penetration on top of it). But most people only use this build for leveling and dump it at 80.

Here’s another thing. When a DK strike is parried/dodged, the rune is not spent, and there’s no CD, meaning you can simply swing again. All the important CDs are magic which can’t be parried/dodged.

Hi there,

How much % expertise would you recommend for a Frost Dk strictly to Pvp in Wrath? No Pve

Thanks

Edit: Thank you everyone for your answers!

I would not focus on expertise over strength and resil if that’s your question. If it’s on a good pve piece it won’t hurt

Expertise is a wasted stat for PvP if you’re gemming for it. Players don’t all have the same chance to block, dodge or parry as mobs.

Avoidance is basically a wasted stat also as you will be taking spells as much if not more than melee hits, so nobody is gearing for avoidance and thus expertise is even more useless.

Depends on class, Casters don’t use Expertise as they don’t stand there and parry, pvp requires 5% hit to ensure primary attacks hit.

Thank you very much, guys!
