So I’m having a fairly decent time on this warrior, I have some gold from a previous level 30 character that has allowed me to get some cheap 2h weapon upgrades from the auction including a blue axe at 21 for 3g.
The weapon upgrades have been a big help (ok I bought a bunch of green gear as well) in making soloing quests relatively easy to take on yellow mobs.
I know this only becomes harder as mobs get higher level so I’m wondering if I should be making a frost mage or hunter way ahead of my warrior to ensure I have upgrades… will that make a huge difference?
You don’t need one, but it will save you time in the long run if you are in a serious raiding guild. If you are a casual player, then I wouldn’t level a farming alt unless you enjoy leveling one.
You have to do , what you think you have to do !
Absolutely not.
It definitely helps having a higher level character to help gear up your alts - that goes for all classes but warriors in particular. The amount of time it takes to get a character high enough for farming, etc. is easily better spent playing your warrior. You’ll make your gold while leveling, mining, skinning, playing the AH, and things of that nature. I wouldn’t recommend getting too carried away with your gear because the mount money sneaks up on a lot of people.
Warriors shine at leveling/grinding green mobs as they get higher. Focus on killing monsters 2-4 below your level so gear isn’t as important. Sure, you don’t get as much exp per kill, but you can kill more per with less downtime which easily makes it better. It makes warrior life much more enjoyable!
Wouldn’t be a bad idea, or rely on professions/AH as a money maker. Herb/Alchemy is a decent choice, as you will need the pots plus can make decent money.
I mained a warrior in vanilla, I played from the start all the way through BC without having an alt higher than 40ish.
Apart from epic mount I never had an issue getting gold for what I needed to do. I could easily farm SM/ZF for gold.
That being said, as a mage now it’s a joke how quickly I can make gold.
I leveled my warrior, got my pre bis then leveled a mage. I’m sitting on over 13k rn
Gold farming as a warrior in endgame is rough, especially when it’s the most expensive class.
If you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing on your mage that makes gold so quickly that it’s a joke?
I first leveled this toon warrior to 45 and felt I then stalled out. Two problems: 1) difficulty in leveling solo (long grinds, a fair amount of being ninja’d at mining nodes, elemental farming, etc - which just began to be frustrating); 2) mostly ran pugs and got worn down by the constant complaining from certain types of dpsers (even though I didn’t drop any dungeon runs, never wiped unless dps wiped the whole group, and generally tried to accommodate go-go-ers by switching to 2h fury with a mix of macros to switch to 1h and shield as the need arose).
The solution to this stall out? --> I now have a mage I just lvled to 45, too. The mage was almost never slowed down by anything, has never received any grief in dungeon runs, and farms most mobs easily. And YES I plan for the mage to start sending gold to the tank for gear as soon as the mage hits 50+ zones.
That mage before tank seems to be working, both as to gold farming and as to low level of group tensions. Hope the better gear for the tank then takes some of the pressure off that gameplay as well. I love tanking! Maging is pretty good, but mostly very low tensions.
if you’re not on a pvp server you can farm very well. If you are on a pvp server it’s very inconvenient though.
Calculate the amount of days /played you need to get that farming alt to cap, and enough gear to make the gold-per-hour you want. Subtract additional expenses such as the level 40 mount.
Compare that to the gold per hour you make on your warrior, or can make if you just farmed gold on that. Consider how to maximize that time, such as including gathering professions, fishing, etc if its more efficient than what you’re doing.
Calculate the break even point. When will you see return on investment?
Lets say you make 50 gph on the mage, but 30gph on the warrior, where is your break-even point once you consider how many hours /played you spend boosting up that farming alt?
There’s no yes or no to your question, it depends on that differential and just how much time you’ll actually spend farming on that farming alt.
You don’t need one but it does help in the long run.
lets say you are super good at lvling and get 60 in 6 days. lets also say you can only grind 20g an hour on your warrior. that means in the time it takes you to lvl a mage you can farm 2880 gold. does that seem worth it? also dont buy stuff on the AH its all over priced
Tradeskills and playing the auction house is a much easier way to make money than farming. Check reddit /woweconomy for tips on how to make gold.
The differential in margins on GPH between solo farming with other classes isnt as high as most people think, maybe at best 6-8G in my own personal experience.
Apartt from the case of Mages who are making almost double the GPH in select instances.
Regardless, it is worth it long term to level Mage. You could consistently make 30-40 GPH on weekends from just Portalling and Water selling at Kargath.
Shhh. I make my munnies off people under 40 as i level different avatars
