When you guys either want to make a thread, want to continue a subject you once raised or are looking for a subject to either dabble in or want to be addressed — Either knowing a thread has already been made of such long ago or come to the discovery that one already exists but is very old & has laid dormant for a long while … Do you:
Make a new thread, like a replicate or reforged making of the existing one.
Break down into depression and have a mental breakdown that you can’t address it, refusing to remake or rise-thread-from-dead.
… Or open the book of Kel’thuzad, crack your fingers with a grin and get ready for some good ole fashioned necromancy?
I’ve always been curious at the public view amongst forum-folk of the subject to such ordeals and dilemma; thus thought I’d query it for discussion.
I’d lean towards just making a new thread. But either is going to be fine most of the time. Creating duplicate threads and necroing threads are both technically bad. But while the forum rules and code of conduct are nice to know, and you could technically get actioned for breaking them if you bother the wrong person or mod, generally speaking they’re more like guidelines and stuff gets ignored all the time.
Threads age it’s best to make a thread that is up to date instead of necroing an old thread that has no value to the current changes that have been made to the game recently and since then.
That’s the reason why Necros are generally a bad idea, but it isn’t always applicable to the situation.
For example, let’s suppose there’s a joke thread that goes “why do Rogues wear leather armor? Because it’s made of hide” and the comments are just people laughing or raging at the joke.
But it was made 5 years ago.
Objectively there’s no reason not to Necro this thread. The joke still applies. Rogues still wear leather armor, and they still do stealth. Laughs haven’t changed significantly in the last 5 years. The thread is essentially evergreen.
But if you Necro that thread, people will rage about it because the WoW community has some heavy behavioristic conditioning that makes people hate seeing Necros regardless of context.
That’s kinda weird, but I’ve learned that it’s best to roll with it than to challenge it lol
These two.
Although I cut off the second one because that’s where it stops for me. I have no problem addressing something or refusing to comment on something just because I am feeling depressed, down, or that folks will dislike what I have to say.
Life’s too short to care if I upset bigots or not (since those are the types of people I typically upset; I annoy other forum users at times by having contradicting opinions, but I only ever upset or at least don’t care if I upset bigots).
For anyone who wants to feel more strongly about their ability to raise an opinionated stance and not care about whether it confirms with others … take a course in opinion-based journalism. You’ll become a “meanie” towards others simply by stating opinions that are neigh on impossible to contradict (unless you make a mistake, which I frequently do, so don’t think I’m putting myself on a pedestal here - I’m just an idiot who likes to make as good arguments as I can for my opinions).
If it is the exact same topic, then no time has transpired. Meaning that you are either talking about the same topic that you participated in the conversation at the time … or you are time traveller.
Repeatedly necro’ing a thread over and over again just because the patch number has changed just nullifies the value of the thread. It doesn’t establish, provide, or discuss the topic any further.
As I pointed out here (quoted the full thing since all of it is related, even if the highlighted portion points towards the nature of differentiating between “continuing” and “reviving” a finished conversation; necro’ing is the latter one of these two, not continuing it):
Depends on the topic (how static it is) and how much thought has been put into previous threads before.
Have you come across a npc that you didn’t notice before that could support a new race being added as playable? Necro the “official this race thread” because people put a lot of time into them and it’s worth adding your information or desire to it.
Didn’t win any loot for 4 weeks in a row? I’d make a new thread about it because it’s happening right now and to you, when I’m sure it’s happened in the past, the loot rules change over time. Best to explain it because it’s a valid complaint to bring up if that happens! I’d cry lol
