I recently returned, last having played in Cata. Im 120 now and I tend to be more pvp focused but with the redesign on pvp items (resilience) I’m realizing I need to do mythic+ to get the gear I need.
So my question is can I get away with playing assassination in mythic+ or do I really need to play outlaw? I understand the cleave difference and AOE of outlaw, but would much prefer assassination. Any thoughts/tips are greatly appreciated.
No you don’t have to just play outlaw. I play all three specs and do fine with them.
Make sure you have around 2 echoing blades and nothing personal azerite traits. Just have to garrote 3 guys from stealth and fan of knoves combo gen into rupture, then tab target and repeat.

Not at all. I’ve only played outlaw, but every time I do mythic + with an assassination rogue, our DPS is very even. I tend to do a bit more AoE, and they tend to do a bit more boss damage, but overall it’s anyone’s game. Close enough that you could easily be competitive playing whichever of the two you enjoy more, I imagine. And once reaping goes away in season 3, and they implement the more single target focused affix they wanna do for season 4, plus the nerf to wits for outlaw, assassination might be king in season 4.

Thank you for the replies, last question what are stat priorities? I assume agility crit and mastery since we spec vigor, but maybe I’m wrong and haste is more important?
Absolutely ignore mastery. It’s useless for outlaw, and you’ll have a ton just from the necklace. For me, crit/vers are top, then agility, followed by haste.
you can play whatever you frickin want m8.
i think for pve scenarios its agi crit haste for sin.
i havent the slightest for the other two.
i think mastery stacking is still a thing for sub? not sure.
ravenholdt has a few guides. check em out.

Yea it would seem some think so. Ive been removed from 2 Mythic+ groups because im playing assassination. When i inquire why i was removed i was told that they didnt need sh*tty AOE damage and L2P outlaw.

Going off the assumption it was just sub 10 keys, those are pretty garbage groups. It’s a pretty good thing you got lobbed before it started.
I do M+s only as assassination, normally being top dps on them.
But you really need good azerites to be able to do it.
You can play Assassination in M+ it’s just that the issue is all of the Azerite gear that you need for it is from the M+ Vendor and it’s going to take you awhile to get it whereas Outlaw pretty much just needs 1 Wits trait and you’re good to go.
Edit: Actually Conclave chest has SS / EB so actually there’s that. Rasta shoulders are okay but not best. Biggest thing without 2 EB at least you’re going to get demolished during reaping waves.
Nope, for example when I’m in Sin spec. I won’t do much on trash overall but I’ll absolutely destroy the boss.
Two comments:

I’ve been asked my spec before joining, responded “outlaw” and not been invited on several occasions; and

Every time I’ve grouped with an assassination rogue, they’ve competed with me, and occasionally beat me on AoE, always did better single target, and we usually end up with very competitive overall DPS for the end of the run. In some dungeons, they absolutely destroy me. Did a 19 KR this week with an assassination rogue, and we ended the run with me having 24k overall DPS, and him at 30k.
Those guys are stupid.
Don’t forget, the season’s almost over, and Blizzard specifically mentioned wanting a more “single target” oriented +10 affix next season. It was reaping that was making outlaw shine. With that gone, I’m betting my silver on assassination being the way to go next season. I’m still gonna play outlaw, because I’m a stubborn old combat rogue.
After 8.2 without the big reaping pulls we will see more diversity in rogues in mythic +. But even now I seen sin rogues preforming very well in some of the high 15ish runs.
I don’t see many sub rogues at the moment though so I can’t speak for them
Just play what you enjoy and get really good at it.
I started the expansion as a Outlaw rogue, and I saw the exact same thing you did
Sin still crushes mythic content. Outlaw is God, sin is the devil.
unless ur pushing M+20s u can play any spec and be more then fine
edit:
id argue any spec and class can be played in mythinc/pvp to Mythic+10s and 1800 which is def above average. if you can do M+20s or 2400+ on one class u can get M+10s and 1800 on any class/spec. good players are always good. if you struggle on your current main dont expect the class to magically propel you to a higher level.

Although I agree with you in principle of what your saying, I’d be hard pressed for you to tell a Ench sham struggling to get into groups that its not his spec but him thats holding him back, and that Outlaw rogues don’t have it easier grinding IO.
To be fair, that’s not comparable. It’s more like, a balance druid to a resto druid. One is certainly more popular and easier to get into groups, but both are very strong and popular at the moment. Same as sin vs outlaw.
Thats a fair point, although I’ve never been in a group that wanted a rdps but turned down a bomk but I’ve only started trying 15s so I dont know the community north of me.
Although Ive been in groups demanding 1400 io but take 1100 rogues and simply asked ‘can you press shroud’ made me wanna throw my comp at the wall.

It was more to compare that, while boomy is one of the best rdps, rdruid is more popular and in terms of meta “better”. Perhaps a poor comparison, due to the role difference.
I suppose a better one might be destro vs affliction. Destro is technically better, but you won’t have much more like than as aff in keys, by any measurable degree.
