Do factions serve a purpose?

Do they?

Now that we have cross faction groups and guilds, factions as a whole seem kinda pointless.

Gives me a blue background to my character. /o/

Yes.

From a gameplay perspective, factions always served a purpose … to annoy people when folks moved realms or wanted to play a specific race. From a gameplay perspective, that’s what factions have always done. That’s kinda the point of factions in fact, in virtually every game ever produced.

But factions add a thematic and authentic feel to the world so … yes, factions serve a purpose and is one of the most important aspects of the game for it to feel alive. Without factions, you cannot have factional conflict meaning you cannot have conflict. The Primalists are a faction just as much as the Horde or the Alliance.

Each serving a different function and purpose, each having various mechanical implications.

Short answer no, long answer yes.
Blizzard should make it so your faction has a certain set of ideals and objectives, and your race and class have either similar or different ones and that clash can make an interesting story.

Factions doesn’t mean being at war at all times.
I don’t expect a human to lead the Horde and I don’t think people would expect an Orc to lead the Alliance.
Factions are about identity, politics, etc.

There will always be factions and at some point war.

They had a purpose. They were in every one of the RTS games so you could see the story from two sides, the entire conflict was first started by the original Horde invading Azeroth, and then they carried over to this game to split the story, justify non-FFA PvP, serve as the backbone of multiple conflicts in the setting, and overall made the game more interesting.

Then the current wave of players who started in Legion and beyond complained about the faction war being long drawn out and pointless, so Blizzard ended it. They complained about the Horde being the dominant faction for once, so Blizzard added cross-faction groups and guilds. And there are frequently posts about how they might as well let you play as any race regardless of faction, so there’s a chance they’ll bend the knee for that, too.

Hopefully they don’t.

I hope one day factions will be nothing more than a vestigial part of the game’s past, like all those Forsaken characters saying “dark lady watch over you” even though Sylvanas is persona non grata with them now.

I feel like they’re pointless in my book because…well…I dunno. Let’s just dissolve factions and have a huge group hug and be done and over with! :revolving_hearts:

It provides a clearly defined list of people that are OK to kill.

Factions just need removed tbh.

They still can. It’s just with the barriers being softened, we might see some variety in terms of conflict.

Cultural significance, old zone questlines.

Sort of, but not completely.

Sort of but it’s a pain.

Not to me. And I’d hate to see a foundation stone of this game be deleted. No reason we can’t work together cross faction, but still have factions.

Yup i still want to burn the new tree for the horde

As a Nelf Druid roleplayer since Vanilla… go for it. I’m tired of all this “ooh new tree!!!” junk. LOL

Russians live in the US.

But you know what, screw Russia nonetheless.

They serve to make us realize other MMO’s had it right from the get go.

What do you want factions to be?
