If I select a shield ability on one azerite armor piece will selecting a shield on another piece work also? Or is it wasted?

The answer is… It depends. Certain abilities can be stacked between different pieces. Some can’t. Can’t say for sure about that one.
Im pretty sure most “shield” abilities stack if you are talking about the one that gives an absorb. If you can give the name of it we can tell you for sure.
Last I checked Resounding Protection does stack.
Values do, but duration buffs dont.
Ex: If you stack an ability that gives you a 30k damage absorb shield with the same trait that also gives a 30k shield, you get a 60k shield.
If you use a trait that gives you 400 primary stat for 10 seconds with the same trait that gives you 400 primary stat for 10 seconds, you get 800 primary stat for 10 seconds.
Easy answer: most stat/stamina/health-wise abilities will stack numerically. The only things that don’t are the ability altering traits, such as “increased chance of X” happening. You could have three traits that increase the chance of X ability but it will not count past the first.
