Rune types. They must be added back, because that is how the class is designed to function. When you can press any ability at any time, your choices are made irrelevant and pointless, and most importantly not fun.
For example, this is the rotation.
No wounds-> Apply wounds
Wounds-> Pop wounds
Now you see what I’m saying? There is no decision making or fun anymore. You have 1 option of what to press at all times. Ideally, we’d have a mop-wod hybrid playstyle, something that pleases everyone.
But Blizzards pride will get in the way of progress for our class, and we will inevitably have another expansion where our classes feel like amateur copies of the originals. The feel of classes, ALL classes, died in legion. You only enjoy current DK if you’ve never played old DK.
I must admit I was surprised when I picked DK up again. Hadn’t played it since wrath, and pre-planning having a bunch of death runes etc, made decision making a lot more important.
I do love just being able to triple death strike with almost no pre-thought though. Just need the RP lol.
I don’t think changing it back would work in todays wow. Unholy, for example, is already far more complex to play than most specs. On AOE at least. Blood is more challenging than most tanks.
Something major needs to be done about frost, but not sure this is the answer there either.
That’s right. While I don’t really see the old rune system come back the way it was before working with how DK is nowadays (Unholy here)… I got to admit that the Rune Tetris “minigame” was kind of entertaining until they watered it down around Cata or Mop.
I never had much of a problem with the old rune system, that being said, my friend Tony could never really get the hang of it… Not sure why, as it wasn’t difficult to understand. But this is life, everything changes.
There was something very satisfying to bring 6 death runes online and then dump them into a necro absorb for their entire health pool.
Those were different times.
Lets be honest for a second here, this is a huge QOL change for us.
Sure, it may feel pruned, or that it took some of the decision making away from the spec, but out of all the “prunes” (if you call removing rune types a prune) this one doesnt actually set us back or feel bad.
I am okay with the change.
If they give us rune types again they need to fix necro, revert it to how it used to be. The main reason unholy was so good was because it was able to convert more runes into necro, and pump more necros out, whereas frost only ever had 2 death runes.
Nowadays I can pump 6 necros into someome for a measly ~20% absorption.
It is if the older design is better. Why do you think we are getting class abilities back? Newer isn’t always better.
As for the matter at hand though, I don’t really see a reason to go back the the 3 separate rune system. With the new one you can just use an ability when enough runes recharge. You don’t have to wait for specific ones.
It was just a different style of play. I wouldn’t say it was any better or worse than what we have now. Different abilities consumed different rune types and converted them to death runes which could be used as any type. It was just one more layer of game play that was removed to simplify rune usage.
Saying DK will remain mediocre because of it is a bit of a stretch though. That’s more of a subjective opinion rather than an objective observation.
This is honestly such a slap in the face to the death knight class This thought process can be applied to any scenario.
For instance Tanking “Don’t have threat? get threat!” Bam tanking ez af old tanking was so much better!! Money “Don’t have money?get money!” Bam life was so ez back in the day!!!
It’s kinda hard for you to judge the intricacies of the death knight class while your highest key is a 15 and you use Adaptation in pvp.
It’s not as simple as “if wounds pop them elif no wounds apply wounds”.
There is this web of clocks that interact with each other and differentiate a good dk from a bad one, such as festermight/apoc/zombie spawn time/unholy frenzy & pet haste/rune & runic power management etc etc (all of these have a huge impact on one another)
Just because the color of runes is the same doesn’t mean the class is any less sophisticated.
Being able to press any ability at any time makes your choices all the more meaningful and relevant. Just because you can press fester strike twice with unholy frenzy up, doesn’t mean you should.
I miss different rune types but I miss blood tap more. Instead of just having rune regen being RNG from spending RP it was more interesting actively managing it with blood tap imo.
Although I guess soul reaper already fills that spot and unholy has too many GCDs already.
Most of all though I miss presences. Specifically blood/unholy presence.
