Dk or ret?

Hello!

Just curious, which plays smoother and has berter survivability in pve? I played ret and it feels really nice but i prefer the esthetic of dk.

Thank you!

I’ve mained both since Legion and it is literally night and day. Ret feels amazing to play, DK, especially Frost feels like a clunky piece of crap. And don’t even get me started on if you play certain races, the obliterate has glitched missing audio. Not only does it feel horrible, you don’t even get the sound effects properly. It seems they are ignoring the issues for some reason. Voices are also bugged and missing for a lot of people. This is just my assumption, but there was a crackling audio glitch for DK’s a while back, and whatever they did just messed up more audio.

They’re generally about equal on survivability, and Frost is smoother to play, since you’re just pressing 2 buttons really the entire fight. But Ret is a better pick, because you’re do similar damage at the end and bring utility that groups actually want.

That’s like 60% of FDK players on these forums anyway so you fit right in. You can just play Ret and get generic DK tier drops from raids to mog (there’s a decent amount from Legion raids).

This statement alone is telling me you should just play DK. Aesthetic is everything in the game when you’re spending so much time with your character in groups and alone.

I mean just look at the new DK tier set. That set is probably one of the most metal mogs in the game I’ve seen in a long time. Compare it to Ret’s new set, which definitely looks cool and unique I guess, but also pretty much looks like a chess piece. Not my favorite Ret set they’ve ever done, but I still do like it. The new DK set on the other hand is hands down my favorite DK tier ever probably— at least top 3.

Personal preference. The ret rework was universally praised but I don’t enjoy it at all. I think a lot of the love ret gets from the community was just because it was an OP meta spec for half a patch.

On the other hand I love DK and always end up either maining it or having it as my main alt.

If you like to heal that’s the only reason I’d pick pally over DK.

I think it’s the inverse. People pick classes they don’t necessarily enjoy based purely on aesthetics, then provide feedback to push that class towards a class they do like.

As an example, there’s tons of people on these forums that keep giving feedback that will turn Frost into just a variant of Warrior/Ret. Those people should just play Warrior/Paladin and mog appropriately instead of trying to force a square peg into a circle.

As someone who mained dk from wrath till bfa, to me honest, only go dk if you wanna tank. Frost is fun, but clunky. Unholy has soooo many buttons you’ll never use, but lots of em situational

To me this is just another point in favor of class skins. Which for me are just a different set of graphics for the abilities and not actually a change in the mechanics of the abilities.

You could for example have something like an Arcane Knight who uses magic to achieve a similar capability to a paladin. Or a Penitent of the Light a warrior who accepts blows and then repays that damage back at the enemy not unlike those Bloody Death Knights.

Okay. Listen to this guy then OP. I really don’t care that much tbh.

Well i want to thank you all for your replies! Dont think aesthetics alone will carry me uf i dont like gameplay.

Really appreciate all the input!

If you want survivability try out a Blood Death Knight, a class so tanky healers basically put them on ignore. They are not going to win any DPS awards, but they are very hard (not impossible) to kill so they can pull several packs and grind them down.

UDK or nothing.

Ret is infinitely better in M+ and a little better in raid.

UHDK suffers from needing massive pulls since its damage all scales massively as mob count goes up so it needs drastically more mobs than other classes to reach the same dps. Its single target is also a lot worse in M+ after the AoTD and garg nerfs.

Playing unholy dk right now you can get out dpsd by DHs and BMs 20 ilvls under you on certain packs with under 8 mobs.

Ret is the easiest spec to play in game currently. It can also do damage from range so it’s very forgiving for moving out. It also is no longer a wheelchair class like before the rework.

Ret typically doesn’t scale well with gear but DK does.

Ret gets the option to play holy too if you dig that.

Ret has access to 2 different raid buffs that are very strong as well amazing utility via freedom, bop, LOH and a dispel. DK brings grips which don’t look strong this tier.

In the end play what you enjoy most.
If you like them both the same play Ret.

Dk all day. The aesthetics, lore, play-style all that just makes it more fun than ret to me. Not only that but dude they’re melee warlocks in plate. (If you know the history of dks.)

Until things change, ret.

OH you mean like the clowns who pushed to turn frost into a rogue/windwalker varient? Shouldnt they have just rerolled to rogue or WW if they wanted to do setup based gameplay? It all started with Chillstreak ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Oh and rework BoS so half our talent tree isnt devoted to some gimmicky infinite BoS build so that our actual normal rotational runic power spenders can feel impactful again

Just because FDKs want FDK to play like a Plate wearing, melee juggernaut, doesnt mean that they want FDK to be ret or warrior

FDK always had a slow moving, hard hitting, hard to kill fantasy for its entire lifespan only up until very recent times where its been turned into a psuedo rogue, and only since then have i seen the amount of outcry by dks about how trash the spec feels

Plate dps specs should be brawlers, In the fight, Not kiting away, High survivability and ability to self sustain, with either a loss to Mobility or Utility

For the same reason that Leather classes should be cooldown oriented, Setup based, High burst damage, Low sustain damage, High mobility or Utility, With Bad survivability

If you play Mythic plus i wouldnt touch unholy with a ten foot pole. Its trash

Ret is on par with UH in keys.

Stop

There’s more to M+ than damage, and “being on par” with Ret for damage and not utility means that spec is, in fact, much worse.

Unholy (and Frost) are infinitely worse than Ret and other melee because you’re not bringing 20%+ more DPS over them to offset the lack of utility the DK class has.
