It seems like night fae is best for just 2 handed frost DKs according to wowhead but Venthyr is adequate and best for dual wielding frost DKs, unholy, and blood DKs.
I feel like committing 100% to a 2 hand obliterate build and roll night fae but man oh man do I think the venthyr covenant is way cooler.
Have you decided what covenant you are going to roll now that the dust has settled a bit or just wait to see what the mob rolls after a couple weeks?
Night Fae is ONLY good for 2h Frost, and it’s not even showing up for DW frost at all rn. Venthyr will broadly offer you better performance with Frost, Blood, and Unholy, and if you’re dead set on 2h frost, which will end up as suboptimal without a major overhaul to Frost, why not take on another suboptimality and play Venthyr with it for the sake of fluff, which you seem to already care about more than throughput.
No real point in optimizing Covenant if you’re already playing a sub-optimal build before you even apply Covenant spells or Soulbinds.

True I’m mostly a solo player so I don’t need to really care about raid or mythic+ optimization. I do care about doing challenging solo content whenever available (5mask for example) so I’d like the flexibility to switch specs if required. So it looks like venthyr it is.
I may just play my demon hunter first and see how most DKs end up haha.
From the DK Discord.
What is the best covenant for my spec
None are statistically significant at this time. We won’t have an answer until roughly a week until launch (ie until final tuning is done)
If you don’t do challenging content (high end pvp or early mythic raiding prog) just pick what you like best.

I think that last line is the best possible advice to all players.
I cannot wait to pledge my DK to the Necrolords; exactly where he belongs.

I can’t wait to try out all the different covenants, but Venthyr was a blast on Blood dk in Torghast.

I just wish the necrolord cooldown was shorter atleast outside of arena. That grasping hands thing is just too awesome.
Agreed, the grasping hands are incredibly neat. For such a unique and zany ability, one that builds upon a signature DK move, it’s a shame it gets roasted or ignored by min/maxers.

The main concern with Necrolord I keep seeing is how abom limb is really dangerous in M+.
Kyrian is the best single target damage for DK.
Venthyr is the best for AoE/M+
For pvp alone I am rolling Necro. I can’t imagine going necor will hinder me that much in rolling _15s and heroic raids.
The skill/Amor is just too cool and if you have the legion scythe unlocked it matches all too well.

Looks like Necro for pvp. It’s up in the air for the rest atm. Personally I’m not sure what I’m going. I’ll be tanking and dps so most likely Venthyr.
The DK discord is a great place for info on this stuff. Bicep and Xpire know their stuff and are pretty level headed about everything.
Sounds like Night Fae fell hard for some reason.
But for me I blood main and unholy DPS as a side spec, so what is likely the better play for covenant? I do all content so it comes down what works the best overall it feels. Kinda hoping Venthyr will work well enough

Venthyr works well for both. It is shadowdamage so it scales with UH mastery. it does great aoe damage and the extra runic power it gives is useful to both Blood and UH. Not to mention the soul bind for Nadja give 20% food flask and weapon enchant increase (Which I am assuming will affect our runeforges).
The teleport is also pretty useful.
