'display only character achievements' toggle no longer in wow since 11.1?

pre 11.1 there was a toggle i believe under the social setting of interface, that you could enable your achievement log when someone else targets your toon and does /compare achievements or whichevers where you could limit it to character only.

this was in rare usage, a safeguard from trolls/griefers who used sites like check pvp, but i am mildly paranoid, with this option now gone, that anyone who looks up any given toon, can now see that persons alts as before if you didnt enable the toggle where it showed achievements as account wide.

i would post this in the correct forum, however i lack game time on both of my NA accounts to do so. limiting me to here in this forum.

im not exactly sure why this toggle setting was removed, or when. i was under impression it had been taken out with 11.1’s launch but if its been out since before then, then apologies.

6-10 days ago are when threads started popping up. Looks to be related to more API changes. There are threads in Bug Reports.

The toggle was removed as the underlying functions were removed from the game. Any character that logged in after this was changed has the hidden status cleared as its not longer applicable. The change was undocumented, as most api changes usually are, so I doubt we’ll be given a reason from the devs as to why this change was made.

I just noticed this myself. Frankly it’s not acceptable to remove an anti-harassment feature like this suddenly and without notice. If I wasn’t running an addon that auto-enabled it and I didn’t finally pay attention to the errors it was throwing I’d have no idea this was happening.

The only thing I can assume is this is a cost-cutting measure and a rather pathetic penny-pinching one at that. It’s one more tiny little thing they can rip out that databases won’t have to handle. The goal I’m sure being to hard-merge all achievements account-wide along as part of the warband feature. I wouldn’t be surprised to see character-specific achievement tracking removed in future as part of this as if they’re not going to allow displaying the separate versions to others I see no reason why they’d keep tracking them internally.

Some of us have good reasons for wanting to prevent people from tracking all of our alts. Some of us have dealt with persistent stalkers, harassers, etc.

Some of us just don’t like having the most disturbed people on the internet making repeated random toons to scream abuse (always careful to avoid breaking tos by not using bad words) in whispers at all of our alts as we log onto them, not giving us any peace over:

a forum post they disliked, over the fact we refused to trade them a piece of loot they felt entitled to in a group, over the fact we bought out an auction they accidentally underlisted and refused to pay them the difference or return the item, over the fact they were kicked from a group we were in and want to take it out on us, over the fact we wiped and they want to rub it in someone’s face that they think that person is bad and should be driven from the game.

These are all real examples I’ve experienced of people who’ve made a character in the past on a server to whisper me stuff, not all of them would have gone to the trouble of tracking my alts and harassing me on all of them but some might.

As someone who plays on RP realms I might add another, people can take In-Character RP actions incredibly seriously. Ask anyone from an RP realm, there’s always drama, guilds falling out with other guilds, people who because of one RP interaction (in-character, good faith) decide to blacklist a person and spread rumors about them and demand their circle blacklist them as well. It’s crazy but until now at least we had a way of somewhat containing these types of people and their campaigns of harassment, exclusion, drama, etc.

This is a feature that’s been in-game for over a decade and was added shortly after alt tracking websites started to become a thing in 2012 (patch 5.0.4).

Blizzard, give us this option back immediately. At the very least they could allow us to falsify and fuzz the earned display dates via the website and in-game to make alt-tracking harder (e.g. show all the achievements but with an option set the earned dates are fuzzed per character within 6 months to a random date).

Edit: There is a fix. In the account section of bnet on the website under privacy an option called “Share Game Data” if set to disabled accomplishes the same purpose as this but in a more comprehensive way across your account. Thanks for not documenting anything Blizzard.

Without all the anecdote before this statement, you’ll want to post constructively over in the Achievements forum if you’d like to see it brought back in a different format. It’d be helpful if you include how you think they could implement it and what it might look like on the user end since you’re asking them to build a new game function completely from scratch (see comments above about API changes and removals so API connection is likely not an option now).

I understand the OP can’t post (or even move?) this topic to another forum, but I feel like everyone else posting here really ought to. No feedback is gathered in the Support forums so all the discontent will not be heard.

I’m unsure if Achievements or General would be a better fit. I’m personally leaning more towards General simply because of the broader nature of this change. Though it is also linked to Achievements and the topic will likely…degrade less over there.

It is certainly an odd change to be sure. While I never used the feature, I can fully understand why people would and did.

Edit: Below is a link to undocumented changes from the recent patch. It points out the change, only communication I have been able to find on this.

My DH which had toon only achieves showing just a tiny bit ago now no longer does. Why did they do this? This is really annoying. Not a single person asked for this. I wanted to see where that toon was specifically. Did more harm than good.

They don’t read our suggestions anymore; they don’t read any of our posts here. This is a terrible change. No one likes it. I am trying to get the over 9k achievement on more of my toons. Now I cannot track what they have. Current dev team is legit ruing this game. Fire***** private server for TWiW was JUST created simply because of this issue. It had guild rosters the way they were originally by typing /groster to get them back…also another thing the majority did not want…and have the achievement point system the way it used to be. I pay to play World of Warcraft. They keep making changes that the majority of people hate. Why pay when you can get better for free is exactly how I view it. It is better because it is exactly what we all agreed to pay for. I do not want to pay for this. The MMO should be free at this point because I do not agree to pay for this. What will they change next?

Oh and btw…there was a direct correlation between our guild rosters getting forcibly changed and all of our stuff vanishing from the guild banks. They gave us the option to have the new guild UI but you could still see the old one using /groster…but… as soon as they removed that option… the guild mass delete happened.

So what’s the next change? We have to pay real life money to use trade chat? Wouldn’t put it past them…and btw… a far better versio0n of what this game used to be just a few months ago exists out there and is playable. Just throwing that out there since everything here keeps getting ruined and we are even paying for them to screw it all up.

And…they wont even allow me to unsub.

Bump. Please fix. Privacy is important Blizzard.

So its still not back, Blizzard will do anything but protect its players I guess.
