Disheartened old shaman

Basically just the title. I’ve mained my Enhance Shaman since Mists of Pandaria but with Season 4 I’m really struggling to stick with it. Only other time I stopped playing was at the start of Shadowlands, where the state of it was just unenjoyable for me. For context I’m an Enhancement main but also a player who believes strongly in playing what you want opposed to meta, you’ll have more fun that way and likely change a lot of minds.

We’re in such a weird place right now as a class. Our forums are on fire without any communication to even indicate some of our worries will be addressed. I felt that the return of class trees is great for the game but Shaman’s trees have struggled immensely since their inception. They may have been one of the best looking initially but between not having any genuinely impactful capstones in the main class tree and heavy point investments in general mean that you don’t get many of the things that should be baked in (looking at you Feral Lunge, Windfury Totem) while at the same time many of the tools which we had all of previously(and have been pruned under the pretense that we had all of them) we now have to pick and choose despite them not being generally impactful at all.

As a class we’ve suffered from having the tree be as rigid as it is. The idea behind an Enhancement Shaman was a totemic warrior capable of going toe to toe with some magical firepower under the hood, with totems and imbues to help provide control and in some cases years past power. I understand that designing spec trees is difficult but I don’t think the class was ever supposed to decide between Physical and Elemental damage. (Same goes for Elemental. Elemental caster, not strictly Fire or Lightning)

I’ve been really trying to hold out hope that we’ll have some strong adjustments made during the alpha-- some classes have had some really awesome work done, with care and consideration to how it plays and it’s thematics. But seeing just how long it took to get our very undercooked hero trees I’m starting to sweat a little. And where are the Shaman visual updates? Not only does Lightning Shield look like garbage, it’s basically unfunctional and that same sentiment can be extended to a lot of our abilities. Frankly not having more Ghost Wolf options is insulting, and given how many elemental effects came out during Dragonflight I thought we were a sure thing for a visual update.

Wildly the class has felt like it has had concepts and ideas sent to other classes over the last few years as well, but nothing as egregious as creating a set of Hero Talents with the idea that we’re the sole lightning casters and then giving Stormstrike damage to Warriors instead of creating our talents around that. Something that arguably should already be a thing in the case of our ability, Stormstrike.

When the Mage rework came out I balked at how awesome the changes were to their trees. With Retribution I was blown away. I’ve loved the class fantasy and aesthetic of Shaman and Enhance in particular for years but it’s really hard to keep putting effort into my shaman when it no longer feels rewarding. (And in truth, can be frustrating when you don’t have the defensives to play the video game. Ankh is not a defensive.) We’re simply outclassed and after years of erosion and lack of visual updates it feels like playing a class stuck a few years back, but without some of the cool things from it’s past that have made people want to play it. (Few Honourable mentions: Redirecting Totem, Healing Tide, Primal Earthen Bulwark, Flame Ele/Liquid Magma for Enhance)

I guess to end my rant, those who have played a long time and are thinking about moving on-- where? I myself am considering heading back to Druid.

Enhancement is fun to play and I like it thematically, but it really feels like a spec designed for a different game or different time in this game. I’ve been having trouble playing mine as well.

I think most will go paladin. I think its safe to assume that enhancement players like the meshing of melee and magic and ret delivers that. Its sturdy, doesn’t have to deal with target caps, has healing spells like a shaman, has no janky setup for its aoe, and it actually brings the utility that people think enhancement brings.

The rotation is simplistic sure, but the skill expression comes from actually using the utility. Dropping a LoH on the tank or BoP on the healer to save a wipe makes you feel awesome. Ret has hard cc, dispels, ret aura is infinitely better than WFT, and they have a long duration single target stun that’s instant. They don’t have as many aoe stops as enhancement, but they do have one.

Its not an accident that in M+ timed runs of any key level ret makes up 37.7% of the melee representation (more than double the second highest) compared to enhance’s 3.6%. In timed keys of 10 or higher ret jumps to 45.9% of the melee representation (more than triple the next highest) while enhance drops to 2.7%.

For any long time enhancement players I think ret delivers what they are looking for. You just have to stomach being a single ret in a sea of 10 billion of them.

I have mained dps shaman since I started playing in vanilla, with the current shaman I have here created in cata. I have endured every terrible (and wonderful) patch and iteration that these specs have been through and enjoyed myself through pretty much all of it.

I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, and despite all the things I’ve already been through with this class over the years, I have never been more disappointed and doom-filled when it comes to the future of dps shaman.

The hero trees are lackluster, totemic being actual scrapped together regurgitated roadkill for enhance, to the point it doesn’t even seem like the person who made the tree plays the spec at all. And that’s just it - they don’t. Hunters and shamans ha(d)ve the same dev, despite hunters receiving the communication that nothing is coming, nothing is coming for us either. Blizzard literally doesn’t care.

It’s incredibly disappointing, and in a way insulting to players, to completely abandon work on two original classes bc blizzard can’t figure their own staffing out.

I’m on the verge of quitting a tier that already didn’t matter (S4), and will be running cata for a bit, but I can’t say with any certainty I want to stick around any longer given the current circumstances. I care very much about these specs, but it’s abundantly clear blizzard does not.

If I do come back for tww, probably windwalker or warlock. I would hope that they just hire someone and hit the ground running with shaman in alpha still, so I can actually play what I want to, but we’ll see.

edit: look at that, yet another build / blue post with nothing to see for shamans or hunters

Yep big old bag of dissapointment and its the most frustrating thing. Do what i do quit at the start of every expac come back at the end when we are mediocre :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve played Enhancement and Elemental since TBC days. I thought it was simpler than Paladin and different over playing Hunter. I put the tard in Hunter not understanding why I couldn’t go toe to toe in melee against a warrior when I was learning the game.

It’s easy to lose hope for the class. You play the class because you want to and there’s something in it that appeals to you. If we compare the class to others, sure we’re blown out of the water. The powers that be who ordain certain classes to shine 24/7 are UNACCOUNTABLE to the Shaman player base, cough-cough per the forums.

So why play Shaman still? Are we meta? NO! Have we ever been meta? Marginally if you’re Restoration. I play shaman because I like it. I’m not a meta slave. I like feeling unique in a sea of certain classes that dominate the LFG system. As negative as anyone feels about the next expansion and seeing how all the other classes/specs get the royal treatment, to hell with them! At least you know when you put out the numbers you have skill over those refined 2-3 button specs who can be lazy and have the class carry them. YOU EARNED IT!

I’ve been playing shaman since Wrath and it’s just depressing at this point. All I really want to do is cast a bunch of lightning magic. Stormbringer looked hopeful for a bit, but it does not even remotely deliver on that.

My issues are mostly from a pvp standpoint (outside arena).
In no particular order here are my issues:

  1. I think feral lunge and gust of wind should be baked into a single ability. Get rid of feral lunge and add a second charge to gust of wind. That’s one less keybind to worry about.

  2. Enhance has way to many global cooldowns for a melee class. Getting rid of the global cooldown on totems would go a long way in solving this issue.

  3. I absolutely hate the primordial wave playstyle in pvp yet someone at Blizzard thought it was a great idea to literally force it upon us by giving it a massive boost from the 2 and 4 piece tier set. No other options were available… just primordial wave.

  4. At least two of the three totems available with pvp talents should be baseline to help enhancement deal with ranged classes like hunters. Why do some classes have so few pvp specific talents that make a huge difference and enhancement has to make huge tradeoffs like that? Seems very unfair. I’m specifically referring to grounding and counterstrike totem.

I think these are the main reasons why you see few enhancement shamans outside arena. Heck, if you look at the solo shuffle arena ratings the top shamans are played by one guy who created numerous alts. So maybe they aren’t as popular in arena as I thought.

That sounds fine, but isnt the flex you think it is. Having to mash more buttons in a convoluted rotation to hopefully be equal to other classes with much more efficient gameplay isn’t a win. The spec and class as a whole has suffered more downs than ups, and a serious lack of direction since tbc. Even in wotlk, where they were meta in the first few tiers as enhance or ele, the spec was convoluted then. We keep getting buttons thrown at us while being stripped of any utility or uniqueness we bring. Thematically, shaman will always be my favorite class, but when most progression guilds won’t even consider you, there are glaring issues.

You haven’t played elemental in Season 3/4 have you? Because it is by far the most brain dead boring spec in the game currently and one of the reasons it so badly needs a revamp next expansion.

This is the only thing needed. People coping on this global filled clunky piano class that gets shattered and does mediocre dps as the payoff, is beyond damaging for this class. I feel like half the people are fedora tipping “off meta on purpose” players and genuinely don’t care about the spec actually being fluid and competitive. The AND there is key.

Im going to WW monk. Ive been having a blast on it recently and it has prevented me quitting the game because of how I feel about enhance. I’ll also play warrior, pally and evoker just for some variety and my shaman will just become my completionist toon, which is honestly really sad because its been my main since TBC/WotLK.
