Community,
For those that don’t want to read my thoughts below.
Discussion Question: Should healers who do not have damage built into their rotation (RSham, HPriest, RDruid, MMonk) be expected to dps in mythic-level raiding? Is it truly relevant to success 5 weeks and farther into a patch (I.e. Not counting “Race to World First” scenarios)? Is it a net gain to the raid to use GCD on dps?
I consider myself a pretty good wow player. I typically parse 95+ through the raid tier in whatever role I perform. Prior to Shadowlands though, I played with a very casual guild where I excelled. Performance wasn’t theorycrafted as heavily as progression wasn’t a focus. I wanted to be with a stronger group this expansion and joined a guild that is progressing through Mythic Raiding at what is probably a “standard” pace. We are not top 100 or possibly top 1000, but we will end up being 1-3 on our serve. We are currently 2/10 Mythic.
My raid leader is an extremely effective player and a pretty good theorycrafter, but he makes points at times that healer dps is important in the raid. While I would concede that is the case in the first week of the patch when the best guilds in the world are trying to squeeze our 110% of their raid’s capabilities to kill bosses, I do not believe this is the case as gear starts to flow, ilvls start to increase, and DPS classes get more efficient. I’m not saying I don’t want to. I do well in M+ where healer dps DOES seem relevant due to the time situation. However, I just feel that any GCD in a M raid that I am not watching for my job of healing/dispells might prove in the death or loss of a GCD for a DPS class - a class that has the capability to pump out far more DPS than I do.
As an example, we were on mythic Eye this week, and we were missing the intermission stage by about 10% before the damage was too much for our healers. Within 3 pulls, the DPS overcame that obstacle. At that point, the raid leader jokingly jabbed at me that our dps should be higher, which would help (we have a good raiding relationship). I then pointed out to him that I parsed 97% on the prior pull, and he parsed 88%. It appeared to me like all he had to do was increase his parse to mine, and we would be fine. lol
The ultimate point I was making was that if dps is missing a benchmark, they can improve to overcome that. If I would have dpsed we’ll say “too much” in the intermission phase, dps could have died, or had to use healthstones, or burned GCD for personals. If I healed, they got more time to pump.
I’m open to thoughts from the community. Please again remember the context of my question. i’m not talking about Race to World First. I’m talking about 5+ weeks into the patch, progressing through mythic content, is healer DPS from a Rshaman relevant to success and progression?
Thanks in advance.
