How can we manage mana? I have a 3.3k pool at 46 but run out of mana after every pull with minimal if any over healing. When do we start downranking heals?
A long time ago
I’ve been down ranking since level 20. Greater heal and flash heal should be avoided at all costs. Lesser heal is where it’s at. Look up a healing per mana guide for priests.
I started downranking at 30. I don’t use any spells over rank four except for renew and desperate prayer. Dunno if that’s the right way to do it but it’s been working well for me.
Also make sure you’re abiding by the five second rule.
keep down ranking till you can’t keep your group alive, then go up 1 rank. But keep your big heals available just in case you need them in a pinch.
Start down ranking as soon as you have more than 1 rank. I use one large heal (not always max), 1 small heal (about 2 ranks below, at level 29). 1 HoT max level and 1 flash heal max level.
Very rarely use the flash heal, almost always use my HoT. Try to only use my large heal when I know I can get it’s full value.
I don’t down rank at these levels. What you need to keep in mind is down rank only applies to plus healing and you won’t have enough leveling to matter.
So what’s the mana deal? Well it could be your tank is 2 handing in arms spec. It could also mean that you’re casting too much and not keeping the 5 second rule in mind.
What i do is throw a renew up rolling on the tank. I will cast greater heal when he dips to about 50% or so timing if he has multiple mobs. I rarely use shield unless i need time to get off a big heal. Then I wait.
Don’t feel the need to cast anything but wanding. If your tank seems solid and dps not pulling everything requiring your attention then throw some dots up especially on bosses.
Also buy water 45 level. Yes it’s expensive but you should be drinking as much as possible unless you have mage water.
This is wrong. You down rank only because plus healing makes your weaker spells stronger for less mana. But if you don’t have enough plus healing to matter you’re actually using more mana because your down ranked spells don’t heal enough so you cast more instead one your big heal.
My priest friend likes to bubble me before a fight. That way he can take advantage of the 5 second rule and get back up to full mana before even needing to heal me again.
Your friend wrong. Shields on warriors is silly because it effects your rage generation.
Dwarfeus is spot on in his replies…I suggest everyone go read the WoW head guide on Down ranking in classic…Just google…wow head spell down ranking…You shouldn’t really have to worry about down ranking much until lvl 60 and you got a bunch of +healing.
I know, but I have ways to deal with that on my own. Me creating my own rage in a different way allows me to indirectly help with his mana pool. This keeps us moving longer before sitting down.
It’s probably not something everyone can deal with but we find it a system that works great for us. He also pulls a lot of pats and brings them to me, keeping us moving faster. I love my crazy priest buddy!
What do you do pray to the rage machine god?
Seriously though, tell your friend to stop shielding you. The only time a shield should be used on a warrior is to prevent death or time enough for a big heal. What you’re really doing is justifying his bad healing choices.
I don’t shield and don’t have mana issues. Warriors are the easiest to heal if they’re doing it right.
You downrank for one of two reasons:
-
You have lots of +Healing and lower ranks actually give you more HPM (Healing Per Mana), making them more efficient to cast than higher ranks.
-
Your higher rank heals would be overhealing and waiting for the target to take more damage would put them at risk of dying.
Ignore the people telling you to downrank immediately. There is no benefit to doing so at lower levels because you won’t have any +Healing, and you are actually spending mana more mana to do the same healing. Using lower rank heals also requires you to heal more often, meaning less time regenerating mana.
I removed that worthless spell (lesser heal) eons ago. No one uses it because it doesn’t do enough of healing to matter. It’s great when youre really low level but that’s it.
Honestly your entire reply wreaks of ignorance of healing priests in Classic. I want to see the look on your face trying to heal Uld or ZF with your own suggestions. Trust me, we’ll both have a great laugh.
I’m a noob for healing vanilla/classic. What is the 5 second rule?
It’s the time for your mana to start regenerating. So cast any spell then it takes 5 seconds for it to start. So it’s always good to delay as long as possible casting.
Meh probably best for you considering you’re 12 levels up on me, but for me it’s great as I have a nice staff that gives like 30+ healing. Maybe downrank the heal spell a bit. Also, I tend to almost never put on anything other than renew on dps unless they are 100% about to die.
My dude look at my level, what I said fits exactly what you’re suppose to do. Of COURSE it will be outdated once you hit a higher level with better heals. Think before you comment lol.
Thank you for explaining. Even though I’m only 22 and 24 respectively on my baby priests, my mana management has been a lot better, but I have not been taking the 5 second rule into account at all. I will do so in the future.
I don’t know man, even at your level i was healing SM and I needed big heals to keep the tank/party up. This tells me you haven’t healed anything of note because you wouldn’t say what you did otherwise.
