Discord vs Guilded

I want to put this as sort of a public service announcement:

I know Discord is something almost EVERYONE in WoW knows of and uses; at least infrequently.

The same company that makes Roblocks made their version of Discord called Guilded. It is JAM PACKED with a lot of the features people like me have been SCREAMING about for Discord to get since it came out.

Just to kind of point out things they have that Discord doesn’t:

  • VERY STRONG automation that you often need to use or subscribe to various bots on Discord.
  • VERY STRONG Streaming Tools including syncing tools with Twitch and Youtube Gaming as well as their own streaming deck.
  • Voice Chat / Text combined channels so when you’re in a Voice Chat you can just throw something in there that everyone can see without having to look some place else on the server.

Now some of the things that us Guild Masters do/will/should love:

  • Dedicated boards for notifications with real markup tools instead of trying to make things look nice through weird UBB/LUA style coding.
  • Dedicated Calendars.
  • Dedicated FORUMS for longer form communications.
  • Massive amounts of user customization.

Their website is www.guilded.gg — take a look while you’re getting ready for Wrath.

All that said, I am NOT a Guilded Employee or have any “sales” relationships with them in any context you can imagine, I just think its a superior product produced by a seemingly great dev team and I’d like to pass along the tool I like a ton.

Happy Hunting!~

That’s what a Guilded Employee advertising in a forum would say

Nice astroturfing.

Nah, its what someone who got sick of Discord’s politics and looked for an alternative would say. Their new EULA released in February of this year prompted me to start looking for something new.

I complain seemingly endlessly when a product has massive problems. I also like to tell people when there’s an product doing good things.

Discord politics? Eh it’s the standard on this server just like TRP3 is so I’m not going to change unless the wider community is.

No one is going to change, would need a major shift. And Roblox isn’t it.

I haven’t returned to this topic, because, well, spending time gearing and felt like enough people just assumed I was some company spy that I didn’t think this topic would have any meaningful conversation. Seems like there there’s at least a little discussion points to be had.

If you hadn’t heard about the new EULA Discord released in February, they basically stated that they are now going to begin actively monitoring all chats for their definition of hate speech.

A big reason I’m concerned about this is I was personally affected by this on my Discord Server. On Jan 5th, a wave of servers and accounts were banned because of fears over discussion of the Jan 6th “Riots” or “Insurrection” or whatever the nomenclature you prefer. Every single person on my server was banned from Discord. We didn’t use our discord server to organize politically but many on the server had discussions on the server why the government was taking such crazy actions related to this event yet various riots around the country that did factually raise to the level of riots didn’t have similar.

My goal herein isn’t really to get into a debate over these politics but to let people know that Discord WILL ban you for “wrong think” and it doesn’t matter how private your server. In our case, only trusted members of that community had access to those channels who actively liked discussing politics and sociological impacts of government. It wasn’t some extremist group and there were certainly people who weighed in both sides of the coin. That didn’t matter to Discord, they banned every account on that server and hundreds of other servers that day.

While I’m not on a crusade to inform people what’s going on here, I do want to make it known.

Thats why I’ve decided to talk about this on the Server Forums and not the General Forums.

I have no expectations that the wider WoW Community will have interest in dipping their toes in, but I figured some GMs around our server might at least consider giving it a look and seeing if they like what Guilded is offering.

After having used Guilded now for most of this year, I think its a superior product with completely different focuses from Discord. Discord is pulling a sort of bait and switching whereby they are focusing on gimmicks to keep people using their servers while I feel like Guilded is giving truly rich features.

Sadly, the scope I think everyone has to look at these days isn’t just the product but the people behind the product. In these cases, Guilded has both going for them IMHO.

I’m a little terrified of the over reach of “right think” of discord. Guilded has vowed to remain politically neutral and they have the history to prove it with no intentions on spinning Guilded off to be its own thing.

Sorry for the book.

The nutters on my own server constantly talk about controversial topics and use “hate speech” in doing so. Never once have we had a warning or ban on Discord. This is a non-issue. Some people just look for problems where there are none.

The new EULA went into affect in March. I’d guess/assume guys on your server have done that since.

That being said, I can speak from experience. On Jan 5th (right before “The Jan 6 Riots”) every — single — person on my Discord Server got a perm ban. Scouting around we found we were far from the only one. Many, many other servers had similar happen. Discord Support wouldnt talk to us. They gave us generic run around cut and paste messages.

  • We didn’t organize or have anything to do with Jan 6th.
  • We, as a server, didnt fund raise, build or do anything with it.
  • We didnt even have anyone attend.

The only “strike” against us is many people on our server was/are openly conservative.

that is because being conservative is the correct choice.

Apparently not in the eyes of Discord. The fact that they are censoring people based private messages that are only visible for a small number of people (In our cases, we had 50 some users and only about 12-15 were super active) makes we weary/scared of what Discord is willing to do.

That made me VERY fearful of what they can/will do.

TBH, this also hasened my departure from Facebook. While I didn’t close my Facebook account, I did remove everyone from my Facebook account that I have other means of contacting regularly (and typically do). Facebook has been relegated to the very few number of people I can only contact by that method. Same goes for Twitter.

Maybe don’t trap yourself in echo chambers of flat earthers, jan 6ers and racists. Then you won’t have to worry about this and probably be a better person.

Your forgot science deniers and anti vaxers.
