Disconnects while web browsing

I’m having a weird problem with disconnects from wow and other games while viewing some websites. This includes Wowhead. I even get dc’d shortly after closing the window sometimes. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It’s really frustrating.

What browser are you using? We haven’t seen this in a while but there were some issues in the past where loading too many ads might cause a disconnect. An adblocker may help with that.

Firefox. But I tried using Edge and I still got dc’d.

Imoen,

If it only occurs with your browser running, it may just be your network getting overloaded. I’d power cycle your connection and if you’re on wifi, swap to ethernet.

Every once in a while I also find an addon can cause this kind of thing, so resetting your UI might not hurt either.

If you’re still having this problem, please create a WinMTR test which catches a disconnection. You want to restart the test every 10-15 minutes until you catch one of these problems. Once you’ve caught one red handed, run the test for about 5 more minutes. This will let us look for problems between your house and our servers which may cause this.

If you have problems with posting it due to a link error, go ahead and copy paste this into your next post, and replace “WinMTR goes here” with your test.

I’ve been having the same issue but if I keep it in a shrunk down windowed mode it doesn’t crash. Full screen blows it up (I use 2 monitor system)

I’m just dc’ing, not crashing.

Imoen,

Overall your connection seems to be taking some high latency spikes - at least often enough to drive the latency between your PC and router up to 8-10 MS. I expect when one of these spikes occurs is when your disconnection happens as well. Were you on wifi or ethernet when you ran these tests? If not, did you try swapping to ethernet?

If that doesn’t give you any luck, it could be that your network card is handling instructions wrong - maybe we just need to update your network drivers and make sure windows is updated?

The weirdest thing is that the dc is delayed. It can even happen after I’ve closed my browser.

I get you, it’s just possible there’s something cached. Did the steps I posted above help? If not, can we get a new winMTR while you’re connected via ethernet?

Tagging along with this one. My wife and I also struggle with this. We’re on the same home network and if I’m in WOW and she opens Chrome on her PC, I get disconnected withing 5 seconds or so. If she is in WOW and I open a the new MS Edge (Chrome-based) development browser, she also disconnects within 5 seconds or so. We are each on wired connections. Latest version of Win10, all drivers updated to the latest, including motherboards. We have a steady 180 Mbps cable connection. Once the browsers are opened, we no longer get the disconnects. It seems to be the actual “opening” of the browser that causes the issue. Would love to find a fix for this.

Hey, I know it has been a while but it’s still happening to me. I have some new info:

-There’s either no lag before the dc or some things like chat lag and some don’t.
-I’m playing on a wired connection now but it makes no difference.
-It also seems to be the case that anyone in my household browsing the web can cause me to dc.
-Some websites cause it and some don’t. Twitter doesn’t for example.
-It also can dc me when I’m playing Diablo 3 (error code 1016) and WoW Classic.

I suspect it’s on my ISP’s end because it started happening just after my family switched services from an old AT&T DSL connection to a Comcast business-class connection last year.

Imoen,

That narrows it down significantly. If it’s happening specifically when other people are on the internet, and your tests look like they do above, it’s probably a problem with the router. Have you tried swapping it with the ISP yet? If you upgraded to a higher bandwidth service, you shouldn’t be getting bandwidth capped due to light browsing and gaming. Probably the router you got was a lemon and all it’ll take is a swap for a new one.
