Played retail all day, downloaded classic, opened anniversary realm, made a mage and leveled to 3, closed to switch to retail, and now my client has been stuck on connecting for an hour. I tried reinstalling bnet and restarting my internet… neither did anything. What the heck happened?

Did you try rebooting your computer entirely? That usually clears up any technical snags.
If the above didn’t work, you’ll want to edit your post and move it to the Technical Support forum for more curated assistance. It’s quite possible nothing is wrong on either your end or Blizzard’s, and rather somewhere along the route you take to connect to their servers. The owner of that locale might have their issue fixed in short order.
