As disc priest we rely too much on pre-planning and any RNG makes everything much harder than already is for a hard spec. The penitent one feels so good and bad at the same time because of the rng proc chance, and we don’t have a variety of legendaries to choose either so most of us are stuck with TPO or Twins of the Sun Priestess. When it comes to healing, our problem is not having a base spell good enough to heal through atonement alone and we need to switch to spam shadow mends in a non eficient manner. With TPO, penance receives a good buff to become viable to play around without the 4set, but even more with it, since it is our only legendary that synergizes with the set and we gain value from.
I’d like if TPO didn’t have the proc chance and be more reliable, being a 100% chance, everyother radiance or every X atonement applied, like 4set resto druid, so it could have more synergy with Sins of the many too, and then some tuning if needed, which I don’t believe it would.
In regards to Lenience, it is a very poor talent, on any form of PvE content, because it is a harder and weaker version of devotion aura. In M+ it is only taken because the other 2 talents have almost no use in M+ environment. Perhaps this spot should work with Barrier instead, reducing its cooldown, increasing barriers value like the PvP talent, or maybe something new to increase single target output that we lack; If anything, buff the damage reduction from lenience a bit, or by a lot and make it work like Sins of the many.
Didn’t know until now, just checked, yes, but that was just a horrible talent. PvP talent barrier I believe is actually good for PvE, considering how big is the downside of not running evangelism or spirit shell.
In Cata there was a glyph that increased healing to everyone under the barrier by 10%. The glyph lasted throughout the xpac, IIRC. They could probably do something like that again.
Would probably have to be a bit stronger to compete with the other talents, so (just spitballing here) maybe something like a 15% healing increase and increase the radius of the barrier by 5 yards.
I think part of why Disc’s talents (and borrowed power) are so bad is because it seems Blizzard thinks Penance is a better spell than it actually is, because they expect people will cast it on allies sometimes.
It IS a very good ST heal on a very short CD that POTDS pumps up to the best ST heal in the game, and castigation/contrition are great supports for it. But if you don’t use it for damage, your damage is pretty bad most pulls unless you can slap tons of Mind Sear out, which it’s unlikely you can.
It’s like they’ve convinced themselves there’s an alternate build that’s super viable that nobody is playing when I mean, you can easily clear content using defensive penance, but you contribute so little to a group that way it doesn’t feel worth it.
The Penitent One, once you mathed it out, was literally the worst leggo Disc had available to it at launch UNLESS you were using d.penance. Seriously even nerfed Kiss of Death and Crystalline Reflection did more. It’s only decent now because you’re guaranteed a POTDS proc every time you get a TPO proc. And that’s sad.
Personally I think if we’re bringing a talent over from PvP I’d take one of our old PvP talents. Increase penance damage and give Smite a chance to reset it. Would feel much better than the current iteration and wouldn’t impede on Raiding.

I think you’re 100% correct. With the 4-piece buffing penance (and not even including Penitent), disc doesn’t feel like an uphill battle in M+ outside of Boon windows for the first time this xpac. It feels like Penance is at a level it should have always been at, TBH.
I feel like when offensive penance is good, Disc feels great. When it’s not chunky, you feel like you’re struggling to put DPS out. Shadowlands at the very least introduced a lot of damage through covenant abilities - So Disc wasn’t in the pits through 9.1. But with everyone else getting buffs to their damage/throughput in 9.1.5 or 9.2, Disc just feels like a struggle till you have tier in 9.2. Where suddenly Penance does damage again and it’s all OK.
And that feels largely only because they positioned so much of their borrowed power design behind penance while it WASN’T good, that now that it IS a good spell the conduit and leggo feel great. Just super strange.
I’ve been forced to spec into holy and does not feel good at all, buc I still go disc for m+, but it just seems a big burden unfortunately… I just want to be viable and not pull out a hundred tricks and spreadsheets info to do it.
For raid we go to max theorycraft as disc.
They could buff damage and tune down the atonement transfer to 40/35%
In Legion, there was an Artifact trait called Barrier for the Devoted that increased Atonement healing by 100% to targets within the barrier.
I always thought this was a really good Artifact trait and I’m surprised they didn’t introduce this back into the game when they were experimenting with Barrier talents.
