Disc priest confusion

So I must be doing something wrong , I have decent gear , but in heroic raiding I’m constantly toward the bottom of the healing charts . Sometimes even getting out healed by the tanks . I play mind bender, I cast it , cast radiance, cast shadow blast then penance and smite …… am I doing something wrong ? How can I be useful so my guild doesn’t force me to dps lol

So a few things I noticed. Your item level is fairly low. You’re not stacking nearly enough haste. Aside from that, disc is a proactive healing spec so all of your healing relies on you being able to accurately predict when major damage is going out. Disc is extremely strong in raid and not lacking in HPS. If you’re applying your atonement’s beforehand, ramping properly, and making good use of your mindbender burst windows, you should have no problem topping the meters.

Another huge tool that disc brings is major damage reduction. This is something that’s very unique to discipline priest. If you want to increase your HPS on the meters, you have to get to the heals before everyone else. There’s no easier way to do that than as disc, when a lot your healing is factored in as absorbs form power word shield. Use rapture appropriately, apply atonement’s BEFORE casting power word radiance, and ramp your mindbenders properly.

I’d also recommend watching some disc streamers healing raid so you can get an idea of what others are doing well and how you can implement that into your gameplay.

im p new to disc priest (not to healing tho) and your logs are in german but i looked at your H volc log

looks like generally 1. high downtime and 2. not using cds right/often is your main prob. PI, rapture, evang need to be used as much as possible within reason

specifically on your volc log you had bad purge the wicked uptime and no pi casts, and no pi is really really bad as a priest as its a huge thing they bring to the comp

Ok I’ll take a look . I do fine in m plus stuff but raids I’m lost . Thank you both for quick responses .

yeah raid disc priest has a steeper learning curve than m+ which ive found very very easy

Haven’t healed since vanilla , guild needed me to fill in so I went for it … I love it but I almost cost us smolderon and had to back to my lock … major ego blow lol

The thing for playing Disc effectively in Raids is that most of your healing is concentrated into your burst healing windows which you achieve by spreading atonements then double PW:Radiance into Evangelism, Shadowfiend/Mindbender followed by as much DPS as you can fit into that window.

That’s what we call “Ramping” and it takes around 16-17s to set-up if you want to be covering around 20 players with it (which is about as high as you can go, can’t fully cover larger groups).

So to be effective as Disc you kind of need to understand the times at which the big damage events will happen and start preparing your Ramp ahead of time to be ready to burst when it lands.

So in general most healers can sort of come to the fight just understanding the basic mechanics while “yoloing” the healing side as they see damage coming in and then adjust their CD usage once they understand the damage patterns a bit better, but for Disc you kind of need to already understand the damage patterns and with a plan on when to ramp from the start.

Disc priest is the hardest healer to play in raids, you have to start building your ramp long before the damage even starts coming in. Meaning you need to know when the the damage is coming in while other healers it’s more forgiving and can be a reactive healer.

Disc priests need to know the bosses damage rotation better than any other healer. At the highest level disc is really good but that’s because the best players know exactly when to start ramping.
