Starting Raiding on Ret and I can’t believe how low our Single Target dps is compared to everyone else. Mages, Rogues, Warriors, DKs, Hunters all above us. Is it even worth bringing a Ret to raid?
Ret has always had item scaling issues, even back in its infancy during burning crusade (classic is sorta off topic). Dps output is extremely dependent on having a good weapon. Flash forward to Cataclysm, even when mastery was fixed (from the abysmal divine purpose as a passive trait that only increased in proc %, never actual holy damage increase), the amount of mastery you needed to hit hard was pretty demanding. The lack of gap closers also meant you have to be very conscious of your positioning in a fight.
Bottom line, learn the class skillset and rotation a bit better and minimize time wasted away from the target or dps loss from wasting holy power or judgement. Ret can do well, but other classes are easier to play when it comes to maximizing dps output.
I mean unless you’re racing for top 100 clears or your guild is hitting a wall at a mythic boss dps check, it doesn’t really matter what you bring for classes.
Yes it would be better to bring another class to a raid, any ranged.
You don’t scale well, never have, never will and your utility is already covered by the holy paladin = goodbye.
If blizz ever decides to make ret viable it wont be until shadowbringers.
This seems to be the truth. Looking over logs and WoW Progress there is hardly any Ret Paladins even listed. The best Ret Paladin in the world is still bottom of the dps list.
Other classes with lower ilvl put out more dps with less effort.
Yea, it sucks. For me it really stood out in horrific visions where alleria took more than twice as long to kill on my pally as this mage. Granted pally is a few ilvls behind, and being melee exacerbates the difference because of her mechanics, but it was almost 2m compared to mage’s 40s.
Thats more than a few ilvl behind then, its literally not having the proper builds.
On my ret it takes around less than a minute to kill visions bosses most of the time.
But onto the subject, ret is deeply falling behind. Funny know they focused so much on ret being single target in the begining of the expansion and still having the middle of the pack single target dps. Thanks to them for the divine storm buff. But I think we should go back to being a cleave lord.
We are among the only dps purely being single target and having to do either aoe or single target while being mediocre in both department. The other specs are arms and sub in this situation.
Why dh have the same rotation for aoe and single target while having the best single target damage and among the top aoe? Why ww main ability is an aoe ability, why destro can nuke multiples people with chaos bolt?
Why ret has to be so basic. Ret is literally representing the middle age while dh is in the future already. Why we don’t have a spell making our next TV do to cleave damage for few seconds? Why we don’t have an aoe holy power generator? Why are we always middle of the pack? Why ret cannot have synergy within its ability like all the other specs in the game right now.
Ret is a Meme Spec as like Enhance. I stopped playing ret seeing how boring its play style and how slowly it ramps up it damage and no meaningful impact outside of CD+Trinket. Since Holy is pretty good in Raid and M+, don’t think blizz will care about Ret anymore. Lets hope in Shadowlands it will have some souls and synergy with its spell.
Just saw a fire mage melting Alleria in about 10s…insane.
There is not much chance of any changes now. Probably won’t see anything adjusted until the new expansion.
There are plenty of fights in the raid this tier that favor Ret. The only people who tend to beat me in raid right now by a huge amount are ones with the right Corruption.
Method released their ranking video for Melee’s in raid and they listed Ret in 4/5th place tied with DKs. But not sure if that means they think Ret is going to be decent or that they just had to rank it above specs like Feral, Survival, and Enhance.
I think you have to separate cutting edge mythic raiding and super high end keys from standard balancing. You can tell in their design that’s not what they balance the game around, hence why you see class stacking so much for cutting edge content. In m+ I may do 30k on a pack without wings and then 130k on the next pack with wings. You have to learn the dungeons and realize what packs are worth nuking and which to coast to maximize your dps and clear speed. We aren’t DH or outlaw rogues where dps is effortless, but even last season I did many m+ with 1800+ io dps and I was always topping overall damage or being extremely competitive. In m+ especially don’t underestimate WoG or Wisdom, that can save wipes along with BoP and LoH.
Another way to look at it is that “middle of the pack” means “balanced” in most cases. I do wish we weren’t so shoehorned into expurgation for ST damage, but it is what it is. I find Nyalotha has plenty of encounters with add swarms that can greatly benefit ret, our worst situation is when there are only 2 targets.
We have this thread, World first Mythic Maut and the ret pally did 60k dps.
lips literally top 3ing multiple fights as ret in mythic against players playing their class at the highest level. Rets completely fine and viable and strong even. This tarkas guys a troll.
Could take into account now that our gain from corruptions is about 1/3rd that of other classes because we hit seldomly and have no dots. As more people get corruptions paladin is going to fall behind dramatically. Example infinite stars actually procs in prot spec, can get about 8k dps out of it. Ret can maybe get 2k if lucky. The corruptions are horribly skewed against rets favor.
everyone in limit has their corrupted pieces they bought em and farmed em. So this is false. Ret has a high skill cap to min max which is why its rare to see a lot of pallys like lipp
Here is an easy exercise to see if your assumption is right op.
Shad’har is a single target patchwerk tank and spank boss.
look at ret pally logs and compare them against other melee dps in the same ilvl range.

Ret looks fine against FDK and Fury in the examples linked no matter the ilvl range. Go ahead and do it with the other melee dps and you will find the same result.
Gear and do your rotation correctly and Ret single target is fine.
Don’t take for granted your raid utility either…
this guys been in multiple threads spreading false information. Hes just trying to find a explanation to why hes bad.
