As a disabled veteran I find it very hard to do some Dungeons mechanics but I do my best. I let people know that I have 1 good hand only and as soon as I do I am removed from the group even if it is my own key. I find it very hard to find players willing to play with people with disabilities. What’s up with that? I may not have the highest DPS but I can hold my own and with a gear score of 230 on my main I find that I am not the worst player and can even out play a lot of people. So what gives why dose everyone think that because I only have 1 good hand I can’t play the game?
I’m in the same boat, being a disabled veteran myself. Worse, I have a neurological disorder (tremors) that adversely affects my ability to play the game. Still, I’ve played since January, '08 and will likely continue to play until I get tired of it. As for raiding, etc., I don’t bother with it, or guilds for that matter, because of the reasons you’ve stated, and just how crappy other people treat disabled players. I’ve got better things to do than put up with their nonsense. So should you. Good luck.
People tend to make a big deal out of things that don’t need a big deal to be made out of them. If you’re doing fine on dps and your gear is good, that sounds like you’re doing better than most in spite of any reasons you may think contribute to the contrary. I would just stop saying anything about it and just play.
Past that, while many people do, not everybody in WoW sucks. There are ways to find chill people to play with, people who care less about your performance and more about you as a person. It might be worth looking for folks like that.
I don’t share your experience but I know I’ve found more value in my WoW life spending time in a more constructive and accepting community than I have in the general PuG community.
you are probably just not finding groups with similar goals. players you’re grouping with that leave after hearing about your condition, are probably going for time/pushing/etc. and want the most successful group they can find…hearing that news might make them feel like they’re going to be playing with a disadvantage.
I think you have a couple options on getting through this though. You can just not mention your condition to anyone and just play. If you’re more than capable to do a decent job and learn, you shouldn’t ever have to reveal anything to players.
The other option would be to join a mythic+ community where there’s all sorts of different types of people to group with…not just some pug tryhard
I don’t doubt one handed players…i literally healed most of a +19 SD last week with one hand. I didn’t want to get oil from my sandwhich onto the keyboard LOL!
/hello
/tar enemy
Etc.
/thanks
I’ve played with a boomie that only had one arm. Did extremely well. Don’t even worry about it and just play to the best of your ability. I think he streams on Twitch as well. I will ask him the next time I see em online.
not to derail… but what kind of sandwich was it?
i was hoping someone would ask
i was gifted a boar’s head roast beef sub from publix! oil & vinegar on the side always
i don’t want to share what else i get on it cuz i don’t want you to think i’m gross
I’m going to nit-pick here, but how are you being removed from your own key?
Secondly, why even tell people you are disabled if you feel like you are capable?
What an amazing grocery store honestly
In theory it makes a ton of sense to let people know that something is handicapping your performance (whether it’s bad ping, slow pc, one hand, etc) but that you’re trying your best, and think that maybe people would be more patient and forgiving about any mistakes that you might make
In reality though I would definitely advise just not mentioning it in WoW groups, and just go out there and do the best you can. You’ll definitely have better results that way in PUGs, although even better would probably be looking around to find a supportive guild
Hey man, don’t take it seriously.
People get removed from groups because they are not a meta class…
Don’t get discouraged, keep playing and make some friends with similar goals.
The game is a lot more fun with close friends to play with.
Not gonna lie the WoW community is ableist as hell (esp if you’re trying to be competitive, RP servers seem pretty chill) and you’re probably not going to find what you’re looking for through WoW forums/Guild finder . I’d recommend going online to find a guild/community that youd like. I’m sure if you typed “disabled veteran wow” into Twitch or reddit you’d stumble on like minded people. Other than that just keep in mind pugging is basically like being a second class citizen as DPS, or even tank/heals sometimes. Good luck OP and keep in mind is most likely not even you, but the degenerate community wow has fostered in places.
