Directx 12 issues, using DirectX 11 fixes it

Having the strangest issue with performance. I was troubleshooting some odd micro-stuttering, lag spikes, dropped frames. Was using a number of tools to troubleshoot until someone recommended to me Intel Presentmon.

In there, it showed I had a large gap between frame time and gpu busy, nearly 2x-3x gap. I was going crazy, it made no sense that my CPU should be a bottleneck. It is a 7950x, PBO enabled with -30 all core curve optimizer. Delidded, liquid metal direct die cooling in a custom water loop. Never over 60c, full blast 32 threads at 5.5ghz. It’s a beast.

Then someone recommended swapping to DirectX 11. And it changed a lot.

With DX11 my frame time and GPU busy are married to each other 1:1, and I noticed an immediate improvement in FPS. Gained about 15 FPS while standing in Veldrakken on a high pop server. Micro-stuttering was gone. Feels smoother, looks better.

So what is up with this, is there a setting somewhere that may be wrong and could need to be addressed? Is there a way to use DX12 and have WoW use more of my available CPU rather than just a handful of cores?

Looking for feedback from anyone who might know about this on a technical level. DX11 is running a lot smoother and higher FPS for me and that is against all I was told to expect.

I’ve seen this a number of times from other players… So just by chance I took a look at my DX… turns out I’ve been running DX12 for at least 4 months now and all without issues. This leads me to believe that maybe there is something else effecting your system instead of DX.

Totally open to suggestions, tried everything at this point it feels and this is the only thing that made a positive difference. Have you tried running presentmon and checking your frametime vs gpu busy, see if you have the same findings as me?

AMD cards dont work on wow, do you have AMD?

the 7000 series mostly

I have 7900xtx u just cant play wow if you have amd it sucks or really any dx12 games for that matter if you google it

Obvious troll is obvious.

No I’m just so fed up with dealing with this for a year with no fix>

Heres the truth my 7 year old 1080ti runs wow better than my 7900xtx,
While in dx12 the 7900xtx looks amazing performs great it just crashes randomly - which is fine i guess if you enjoy that sort of thing. Not great for playing with other players like pvp or dungeons.

The DX11 performance seems to have really taken a major hit with recent wow updates and this is the only consistent fix for crashing issues.

There have been many proposed fixes and none of them worked for me
reinstalling, clean driver install, latest drivers, oldest drivers, preview drivers, registry edits, underclocking, changing the crash timeout delay, RMA the card for a new one still no different.

In fact with the consistent crashing my first card actually stopped displaying anything legible it turned into just a weird gargble of artifacts

I wish I had a a 7000-series card to see if my one-time issue with the driver timeout (from a crashed undervolt) is the same problem everyone else gets with AMD cards. However, I’m on a 6700 XT with no issues, so there isn’t anything I can troubleshoot for myself.

I’m a bit wary of the longstanding issues, since I’m looking to upgrade to a 7800 XT or 7900 XT (or a GRE if one magically appears state-side). WoW is my main game, so I’ll definitely be holding out until my guild gets CE.

Try few things here, Disable full screen optimizations in windows graphics settings, disable MPO, install newest amd chipset drivers(from last week), and in game make sure resolution scale is set to 100%. One of those/ all of those should fix it

Been through that song and dance plenty of times from the AMD reddit. Already done all that sadly.
