I like priests a lot, they were my first real class in WoW that I played. Problem is, now that I’ve invested 7 years into the game, I don’t really like the fantasy about priests that much. For Shadow priests, is there other ways I can roleplay them rather than insane old god worshipers? I really like the idea of relic hunters, like someone who stockpiles powerful relics, but would that idea fit well with priest? What other ways could I roleplay one?
Shadow priests are pretty stuck on the old god stuff
But you could do something with the relic thing
You were a normal priest but kept hearing about the old god corruption so you decided it was up to you to collect items that the old gods have tainted with their foul magics to purify them but they slowly warp you into being more old god tolerant
But you toootally are collecting their cursed items to keep the world safe, not because the whispers keep telling you to or anything

I think of my priest as a darkened Priestess of Elune, who thinks of her arts as another side of her goddess.
They aren’t all insane and evil like that. The void elves are proof of that. Talking to Umbric he’s a completely solid guy and has his mind intact. Alleria too and they’re actually infused with the Void.
One of my story characters is a shadow priest and she’s a normal and fairly good person. Introverted and shy around people. Her interest in the Void is more just academic, not really for good or evil or any higher purpose. There’s no religious aspect. She just likes learning and mastering it for its own sake. But it’s only part of her character, not her entire personality. There’s a lot of ways to RP it!
Some questions you could ask is who was your character before they became a shadow priest? What got them into Void studies? How would they intend to use it and who are they loyal to or enemies of? Do they have any other professions or interests? Stuff like that! You could be a crazy occultist wreaking shadowy mayhem wherever you go, or you can be anything else. A relic hunter is a solid idea too.
One misconception though is the Old God connection. Shadow priests go directly to the Void. That doesn’t make them loyal or connected to the Old Gods or Void Lords at all. Just like not every warlock served the Burning Legion, many of ours were enemies of them. All you’re doing is using the free-for-all cosmic magic.
