Different Class To Class Mogging

Hey all, I’ve played the game quite some time off and on but have never gotten in depth with mogging. I usually play one character which is my main, warrior. That being said. I like a lot of death knight style plate aesthetic. Unfortunately those only drop for death knights.

I was wondering…if I make a death knight and get those drops for him can I then mog my warrior plate gear to look like those items dropped for the dk?

Thank you in advance.

It depends.

Most armor items are compatible by armor type. So most plate armor transmogs you learn on your death knight will be usable on your warrior. But not on your shaman, because the shaman class can’t use plate, and that includes transmog of plate.

If you learn mail transmog on your shaman, you might think “I can use that transmog on my warrior because warriors can equip mail.” But you would be wrong. Each class has an armor type they are expected to use, even if they can equip another type, and failure to do so is penalized in-game by reducing performance and also by disallowing the transmog of those appearances. So a warrior should only wear plate and can only transmog (and learn) plate appearances.

On top of this, some armor is restricted by class. The most common example is raid tier pieces, which are universally class specific. If your DK gets a piece of raid tier gear, only your DK can wear it. This extends to transmog: if the gear is class-restricted, so is the transmog appearance. Your DK alts can transmog that appearance, but your warrior cannot. Neither could the warrior learn the appearance if you loot it as a legacy loot drop, from older raids, where stuff will drop for you even if you can’t use it.

Ok I believe you are answering my question here. I was interested in plate gear that would drop for specifically a DK not a warrior but was hoping I could mog it on my warrior since it’s plate. From your explanation it appears I would not be able to do this therefore I should not make a DK for this purpose.

I appreciate the insight. Thank you friend.

Lots of more recent tier sets have ‘off-set’ lookalikes that are class agnostic. Take the Paladin set from Tomb of Sargeras as an example. The only part of that you can’t get for all plate classes are the pants. Indeed, this character - a Death Knight - is mogging the gloves, belt and boots.
