Of the four DPS only classes, mage feels like the one that least needs different specs.
Rogue: Assassination is DoT Focused. Subtly is about stealth. Outlaw is more straightforward brawler.
Hunter: Beast Master is pet based. Marksman is skill based. Survival is Melee.
Warlock: Demonology is about summoning overwhelming numbers. Affliction is about DoTs. Destruction is about raining fire and sowing chaos.
Mage: Arcane is Purple. Frost is Blue. Fire is Red.
And that’s about it. Why does mage even have multiple specs?

I agree, delete Frost and Fire and give Arcane ALL THE SPELLS! AND 3x the damage done, thank you. I’d also like some more self-healing, and maybe a cute watch transmog. And also a new bike and some Stroopwafels.

Frost was always good to level with, because you could slow or freeze bunches of mobs while you danced away out of reach. Sort of fun. The aoe cap may kill that dance party, but I’ll try it anyway. Plus he’s my only Troll, got to keep him around.

they all have pretty different play styles. Are you under the impression that the only way to have a different spec is to make one dot based, one pet based, etc etc? lol

Mages should’ve have 1 more spec . As healer . Maybe with runes ?

frost is a proc based spec
arcane is about cd and mana management
and fire is the spec to go when have enough gear to make it work lol

All three specs have enitrely different playstyle… Have you ever played a mage even?

I have, and I genuinely can’t tell the difference between specs beyond color and frost gets a cool pet that doesn’t really do anything.

It’s play style. Fire is a cooldown based combo, frost is a proc based reaction, arcane is about mana management and deciding your own burst windows.

I found arcane better for farming old content than the other two. So there’s that.
As far as current content they do all feel the same more or less.
mana barrier tank is something i always wanted

Different styles. Traditionally, frost was about control, fire was about explosive damage, and arcane was utility. I think that’s mostly still true, except I dunno what you’d call arcane now (I just know it’s not for me).
You won’t notice the differences in leveling content because it’s all breathe-on-it-and-it-dies ezmode crap. Go try soloing elites and rares of your level or fight melee in PvP and the differences become 200% apparent.
Eh, nah. I rather enjoy having a caster class that can never be expected to heal.
there’s already warlocks though
Either try harder, or accept the class isn’t for you

Yeah, but I don’t enjoy playing them while I do enjoy my mage. The whole demon/shadow/etc thing just isn’t me.
We’ve got plenty of casters that have a heal spec already. If anything there should be a caster tank spec.
You don’t even use the pet as frost lol. None of the mage specs are even remotely similar. I have a hard time believing you’ve even played mage before.

on board for this-- and i think it should be arcane
Let me guess, you boosted one, mindlessly played it for a few minutes and just stood there spamming spells for each spec.

In Classic, Frost is all about kiting and AOE. Frost mages level twice as fast (from 42 to 54 about 8 times as fast) as everyone else. At max level Frost mages charge for boosting: they solo Mara or Scarlet Monastery (the higher 2 instances) or Stockades, in a group with 4 lowbies who pay 10g/run apiece. They can do that 5 times an hour to make gold.
I like AOE but I really hate kiting, so my main is an arcane mage. I’ve tried the others, but always end up arcane.
How is Arcane different from Fire? I forget. I suppose if you actually had a GOOD REASON to reduce the number of subspecs, you could combine those.
But “it’s possible” isn’t a good reason. Not for game design.
This is a sensible solution. Also give arcane the ability to cast all spells while moving and dispel protection.
Moreover, since we aren’t allowed our own seal heal, give us our own dark simulacrum spell so whenever the priest casts flash heal we cast flash heal.
