Did you hate Med’an or did you think he could’ve been a good character?
I don’t hate Med’an and I think he has the potential to be a good character, it’s just matter of how he’s used.
He’s incredibly unfair. He can be three classes at once due to his heritage. Magic should not be genetic.
I think he’s over the top, being a mix of so many races and classes, which violates what little continuity Warcraft lore has. That and some may call him a Mary Sue.
My problem with Med’an was that his journey kind of invalidates the finale speech Medivh gives at the end of Warcraft 3.
I don’t hate Med’an it’s only one problem for me if Blizzard’s writing could make him a good character or not
Med’an himself is not retconned, his being the Guardian was.
At BlizzCon 2016, Alex Afrasiabi stated that "Med’an as Guardian isn’t considered canon in Warcraft lore, which is why in the last five years you haven’t seen a reference to him " but that it "doesn’t mean that there can’t be a story for Med’an, it’s just not like it was laid out in the comics. "[4] Afrasiabi later reconfirmed that the character himself and the comic series are still canon, but him being Guardian isn’t.[3]
I did not mind Medan. I guess he wasn’t obtrusive, perhaps because there was enough fan out cry to forfend his presence as things went forward.
I am a fan of Garona, so her kid has some good will in that regard.
As a Loyalist, I was thinking Blizzard would really up the ante on Sylvanas being evil, and it would later be revealed she held Medan hostage to coerce Garona into her service.
Blizzard was going ham on laying all the evils of the cosmos on Sylvanas, so I figured that was coming.
Same. I don’t hate Me’dan though I’m no fan and see the problems with his story.
Riiiight! They confirmed that around Legion!
I recall that due to the controversial forum threads that were made
A few people weren’t so happy about it, LOL
Except it is. That was the whole point of Medivh’s conception and one of the reasons why Agewynn chose Aran to be her baby daddy, at least originally. And that has been a thing since WC1, although mainly WC2.
Something Blizzard would later do with Khadgar anyway in Return to Karazhan. Where Medivh basically says Khadgar was always the true guardian of Azeroth. More than he [Medivh] ever was. As it was not the power that made a guardian, but their conviction and values.
Archmage Khadgar says: The demons have been purged from Karazhan! Thank you, champions. Medivh, you would be a welcome ally in our war against the Legion.
Medivh says: My path leads… elsewhere. Besides, Azeroth has found her Guardian in you, Young Trust.
Archmage Khadgar says: I have made it clear before… I do not want such power!
Medivh says: You have all the power you will ever need, Khadgar. It is your heart, your courage, that makes you this world’s Guardian. And a better one than I ever was.

It’s hard to hate him, given that he only just barely exists in the lore.
If he were a prominent character, then… yeah, I probably would? The Warcraft Setting has always been a setting with a plurality of players. Even in Warcraft I there were two factions. Later, there were four. Now we’re playing WoW with dozens of races and nations and whatever.
Everything about Med’an, the way he has one foot in every race and mastery of every magic, centralizes him as the protagonist of the setting. This is a problem because fundamentally, this isn’t a setting that wants a central protagonist.
Note that - when I say he has “one foot in every race,” I don’t just mean his heritage. His birth gave him automatic connections to Orcs, Humans and Draenei but they also decided that he was raised by an Undead and adventured with a Blood Elf. There’s a very clear effort with him to build connections to every major race, which is the sort of thing you’d do if he was meant to be the central character of Warcraft.
Wow, really? I guess I typed “Magic shouldn’t be genetic.” when I didn’t even know that it was genetic in lore, and I needed the almighty Denona to tell me.
Just saying that it has been a thing in the lore since the very start. So you can’t really use it as a strike against a character while ignoring other cases altogether.
God forbid I not like an ugly trope, no matter how pervasive. Not a surprising attitude, considering the source, though.
I don’t even know why people hated him so much when we have a bunch of other gary and mary stus running around
While I’m no fan of Me’dan, I don’t hate him so much. I hate Sylvanas and Gul’dan more (for all that I’ve complained about him, I barely hate Illidan at all).
I don’t care one way or another for Med’an himself, but having Medhiv and Garona be secret lovers is unironically, no exaggeration, one of the stupidest things ever added to WoW lore, ever. Still makes me nauseous thinking about it to this day.
Honestly, the one thing the movie had over the main canon was making Garona Medhiv’s daughter. Way better choice than what the comic did.
My reaction to the character is more “massive eyeroll” than “hate.”
