Did you find easy choosing your "main" character?

For me it was easy. I have liked the Blood Elves the best since I first started playing. I use to play a few humans just to see the other side of the game but now I play Void Elves for my Alliance 'toons.

I experimented a lot when I was new to MMOs, long before I started playing WoW. I kept coming back to heavy armor mdps/tank classes, so that’s what I play. It’s been easy to pick a main now that I know what I enjoy. Warrior and DK are my 2 favorites, with preference given to my warrior. I’m glad that I took the time to try different things at first.

I try a lot but always end up with ele shaman.

Only one I haven’t tried to main is dracthyr

I joined the game as a disc priest in late wod.
But over time i did less and less group content, and disc became worse and worse in solo content.
So maining a healer wasnt the best idea for me any more.
Shadow is fun but i dont like having to be a purple smoke cloud.

So in 9.1.5 i became a warlock.
Its a lot of fun, but i missed having healing spells, and i found it hard from a headcanon rp stance to be a good guy warlock that people would give quests to.

I played around with other classes and in 10.1.5 i became a monk.

Monk is fun, mobile, has healing and tanking, easy to headcanon. I shoot lightening to tag far away things and i fly on a cloud.

Hopefully monk is where i stay.

I’m a roleplayer. So my main tends to reflect who’s story is most relevant during an expansion.

My main character is the one who gets most of my roleplay time.

I chose my main because the name was funny.

It was difficult for me to choose my main character. WoW was my first MMO and the only thing that I had played that was similar to an MMO was Diablo 2. When I played Diablo 2, I had played a Barbarian. My friends told me that a Warrior was basically the same as a Barbarian. They were also playing a Mage and a Priest, so me playing a Warrior potentially completed the holy trinity.

Playing a Warrior wasn’t terrible, but I had to find out the hard way that it wasn’t the best fit for me. I enjoyed protection spec the most because the survivability and utility aspects appealed to me, but I didn’t like the unique responsibilities associated with Tanking (people usually expecting you to lead the dungeon). I also found the lack of movement-speed-increasing abilities frustrating, as well as the positioning requirements associated with playing a melee class, and the sheer number of keybinds required.

I decided to roll a different class. Since I had played WoW for a little bit of time at that point, I was in a better spot to make an informed decision this time. The healing roll really intrigued me, since they didn’t even really exist in Diablo 2. I might have made a priest but my friend already played a priest.

Druids seemed to stand out as having a lot of different things that appealed to me right away. Right away I liked the idea of having a large percentage of my healing toolkit be instant-cast spells. I also liked the idea of healing with HoTs. As a healer I also have a lot of survivability and utility, and also have the ability to mostly hang back and focus on my role (instead of being expected to lead the group, such as a tank). Having multiple ways to increase my movement-speed was great. Being able to stealth was amazing. Keybinds were not an issue when using a healing raid-frames addon.

So ultimately choosing to play a Resto Druid checked all of the boxes for me. That was in Vanilla and I’m still playing the same Druid. I have tried other classes over the years but I’ve yet to find one that I enjoy as much as Druid.

On launch day in 2004 I knew I wanted to be a fire mage. That was my main for a long time but I rotate now to whatever I feel like to keep it fresh.

In the early years of this game it was one main - throughout all expansions. That kind of changed with Cata and Heroic ICC. The concept of one main became extinct with the advent of mythic content.

With the creation of Cata came a full slate of heroic raids. With Legion a full slate of mythic raids.

The game became more “seasonal” and each expansion / or patch of content you played the strongest class if you were a serious end game raider. They have never balanced the classes so they are all roughly the same dps/skill cap. There is a rotation. U pvp or raid hardcore? You follow the meta

I actually just pick one where i like the feel of the gameplay/rotation each expansion. Usually something with a good ezmode build lol. Pick 2 or 3 alts I haven’t played much of that class that feel good and make them alts I do some stuff on. Rotate it with seasons/patches as changes warrant.

I’m a casual andy though.

The “main” for me is just the one that i basically only play to push content with. I swap between toons just as much as anybody else.

But none of my other toons will ever get to 3150 io or clear any mythic raid.

To much time goes into minmaxing once you get to a certain point.

I have other toons that are for friends and guildies to help them gear up alts. My blood dk is 2800ish 484 but its for friends/guildies to make groups faster.

So whatever that is for you is fine. Ultimately the main point is that you don’t need a specific main unless you want to. You can main multiple things but thats what main means to me. It can be whatever you want it to be. Or you can just say you dont have a true main and that’s perfectly fine too

It’s always funny to see people constantly chasing the FOTM “meta” class and often failing to beat the people who simply stuck with the class that they enjoy.

No, the concept of only having one main never died.

i am a longtime altaholic since 2007. I am mostly running pug stuff (keys in to the teens) , BGs, and LFR

I have tended to like to have a different main each expac to try something fresh. I usually have most of the classes leveled to max level.

I mained a prot warrior in shadowlands and got a taste for tanking and just playing an indestructible toon in world PVE.

even with the above said, I have often liked to have one tank, one healer and one dps that I focus on. DF has been pretty alt friendly so that has worked well.

I have a tank (VDH), healer (disc priest), and two DPS (arcane mage and BMhunter) each between 2-2.5k m+ rating.

So i tend to rotate among a few toons.

Easy.

First main: Monk. Why? Cuz martial-arts / meditation theme.

Second and continuing main: Demon Hunter. Why? Great dynamics / lore.

Hmm, i was gifted this character, I watched my dad play her up to WOD. And one day, since he had too many characters then. Since I knew the character’s rotation and everything from just watching he moved her to my account. 11 or so years later and I still play her to this day! I didn’t really choose being honest, It just felt right. I may dabble in Shamans and Monks, but I’ll always go back to this lady.
She has more gametime on her than all my characters combined!

More like you. I’ve played MMOs back to Ultima Online, with main/alt structure in those games, but I only have ≈ 14 months in WoW. I started with a Brewmaster Monk (oops!) and Ele Shaman but once those were 70 I made one of every class, and I haven’t gone more than a couple weeks without playing every one. When Emerald Dream dropped I played my Druid and Night Elf DH through first because those aligned with the content, but I don’t think I’d call either a “main.” I just have 13 characters with 445-452 ilvl that I mess around with :slight_smile:

I don’t chase the meta.

But the serious players do. Out of the less then 100 guilds that killed mythic fryaak i would wager they don’t have D tier classes in their raid comp. I would say the same probably applies to PVPers. If you are competitively PVP arena - they don’t accept any and all classes because you have fun. Their are meta builds that are at the top ranks.

It did die for the serious players.
