i stopped playing wow at around WOTLK and played private servers ever since, just about all of them from feenix to elysium. i started vanilla in december 2004. i clearly remember drop rates being better for quest items. some of them like defias bandanas in westfall you would have that quest done before you would kill all of the peoples militia requirements everytime. another that comes to mind is patrolling westfall paws. these take forever to find. i had to kill 4 dozen, maybe more to get just 8 paws.
it seems like quests that used to have virtually 100% drop rate is now 10% at best. every quest is 10% drop rate tops. i even had trouble finding gold dust and candles in the mines at level 7. it took so many kills to get them when before they dropped almost everytime. anyone else notice this? is this to slow leveling? or a more nefarious purpose of retaining subscribers because they level slower now? i’ve noticed many of peculiarities, like how mobs run away is slightly different, they meander and mechanically run away just ever so different.
also targor the dredd in stockades is for sure in the wrong spot. used to be in the far back room. now he is in the side rooms. this can be seen on wowhead and such showing is location in the back room and not in side rooms. things are very different.
i already see lots of complaints of low drop rates and then others comment back saying this is just how wow classic is, dont like it dont play it. but im not sure most of those players ever played classic wow on release. in fact most people according to subscriptions back in the day came in around TBC or WOTLK or at the end of classic at best and probably dont remember.

Gaaah!!! … wall-o-text!
TIP: The “Return” key is your friend. Love it! Caress it! PRESS it! Do so often!
Regarding drop rates: I strongly suspect Classic has a more accurate representation of drop rates from Vanilla than private servers did. However, I don’t really recall what the drop rates were 14 years ago.

That’s most certainly how classic was. Real bad drop rates for many quests. Especially Barrens quests are notorious for only 1 in every 10 raptors having a head or 1 in 30 zevras having hooves

Can someone tell me what he wrote not going to read that text wall…if its about drop rates i doubt they lowerd it
Low drop rates.
You get more xp from a quest that you have to kill 30 mobs to complete than a quest with 10 mobs.
And if you level faster per quest, they have to design less quests.
If the drop rates were not similar, people would be leveling a lot slower per quest and notice getting stuck at a level with no quests to do.

According to Ion, no changes were made to the 1.12 database data values. So the drop rates should effectively be identical to what they were in the original 1.12 for standard quests (they did mention they were temporarily adjusting some of the instanced content drop rates/tables to match earlier versions though, until later phases roll out and then it should be 1.12 identical).
I thought they actually increased the drop rates. Did the Midas bag quest in the wetlands, got it on the first mob.

The drop rates are fine. They are different than private servers that had it wrong. PServers flood some drops for some reason. You get lots of low level bags. You get WAAAAAY to much meat from tigers/panthers in STV etc etc.
The rates are fine. If you wont believe us, then read the classic wow comments on the quests from 2005.

Its just that you messed some of the heads up so bad the quest giver wouldn’t have accepted them

they are simply not. some quests like westfall stew always sucked. getting the boar livers, eyes, etc. that always had low drop rate. but i notice its every quest. clearly ones that had higher drop rates back in the day now all share the same mysteriously low drop rate.
for example i am on the wolves at our heels quest in duskwood now. killed 20 wolves to complete the quest but only have 3 wolf flanks for the cooking quest from in town. this just wasnt the case back then. this quest did not have an incredibly low drop rate like that. i clearly recall most of these quests did not all share the same savagely low drop rate and stick to my guns that most did not remember the drop rate because they didnt play classic. you are being had. we all are.

I’m glad now it seems the raptors have a 100% chance of having a head, lol. Did that quest last night and just the 12 kills of raptors was hard enough to get. They seemed to spaced out and I usually always found them already dead. That was a slow enough quest at 100% drop rate.
it’s way to easy of an excuse to say private servers had it wrong and yet ignore the fact i played classic 1 month after release all through to wotlk. these drops are wrong. period.

No they are right period. And I played from day 1.

Whats too “easy” is saying the database and comments from 2005 are wrong and that your memory isnt just faulty. Get over it.

I actually think the drop rates are way higher than what I remember when I played back in vanilla, or I’ve been very fortunate so far, which is also very possible. Rng is rng after all

“Muh private servers were accurate.”

Hmmm … I doubt it. To me, the drop rates seem about the same. And I can’t think of a reasonable motive they’d have to lie to us about this. I think you’re just having bad luck. Happens to the best of us. My son got two 6-slot bag drops within the first 25 minutes of playing. Me? I’m at level 16 with my Mage and still not a single bag drop. It’s luck of the draw and some of us end up drawing the short straw.
i think overall, to say that a corporation that just got a huge wave of new subscriptions and that they would not lower drop rates to retain those new subscriptions is incredibly naive. i remember them. some yes were very low and annoying. keyword some. not all. this version ALL quests have a savagely low drop rate. or they simply didnt remember the drop rates and messed up. blizzard didnt have much of the database left and had to contact all kinds of people and even consult the developer of the private server nostralius on how to properly do it and get the data back.

Yes, it was one of the things I hated about Vanilla. I’m being reminded of it now, on my level 13 Hunter.
So I’m in the dwarf area, Loch Modan, killing spider/bear/boar for a quest. The boar does not always have an intestine, how can that be? Perhaps I’m doing mercy killings on these boars, who would have otherwise died horrible painful deaths because they don’t have intestines.
The drop for the bears was just “bear meat”, this was the RAREST DROP of the 3. How could the bear not always have BEAR MEAT? THE BEAR IS CONSTRUCTED OUT OF BEAR MEAT!
But I got a classic feeling, because I remembered this quest from 15 YEARS AGO! I remembered doing the same quest, with that same thing happening
It was kind of funny.

I dont remember 04 quite like you do. I remember spending an hour trying to get drops as soon as durotar, with the crab quest at the troll village.
